At some point #1 will come out. Three different dates were given for it by IDW and I'm completely confused.

Is it 3rd of October at the moment? I think a lot's coming out that day from IDW. In fact, my box will be crammed with Transformers goodness on that day.

The 3rd of October is the third date IDW have given for this title. I'll believe it when I see it. The shifting dates are starting to annoy me somewhat.

You aren't alone there. It is beginning to niggle at me. On the bright side at least they are currently only playing around with the launch date of the series. If they shipping starts to become erratic during the actual run of the series then I may be less forgiving of it. I'm not inclined to stay with series that can't maintain shipping schedules these days.

I can confirm the existence of Devastation #1 at long bloody last. As per usual, there were only a few copies left by the time I got to FPG.

Picked up #1 of "Devastation" this weekend and have now had a chance to have a read through of it. Not bad. There's a lot of recap-age built into this issue - understandable given how much of its plot is rooted in loose plot threads from the previous mini-series. Fortunately a lot of the recap stuff is handed to Nightbeat, and if you extend his character remit from "Private Investigator" to "Consulting Detective" it is quite appropriate for him to get a scene where he gets everyone together to explain highpoints of the plot. (Although fortunately he didn't reference a "curious incident of the Ravage in the night").Readable stuff with a very good cliffhanger. I do hope this series doesn't suffer from the "extended fight were more plot could have been" that befall the last one.
My copy has a cover that is inadvertantly amusing to me - no matter how good an artist is, or how hard they try, there are some character designs that just can't successfully sell "resolute and determined to me", and unfortunately Verity and Jimmy are two of those designs.
Off to a decent enough start though. The odd one out of this weeks stuff: _not_ dropped.

My only niggle with it was that I didn't feel there was a lot of reading in it, it read rather too quickly. Yes indeed the cliffhanger was stonking (the best one IDW have done so far) but if we end up with another fight scene that takes 4 issues it will be dropped. Escalation, while fun and enjoyable, tested my patience in my regard in that area.

I've got a few concerns in that area myself. I'm hoping that they will flesh out both of the main story threads they have established, rather than just dance around one and fill up the pages with giant robots thumping each other. "Devastation" is on probation with me after "Escalation", which I felt was rather content light, I am taking it on an issue-by-issue basis. We shall see what we shall see. I do know what you mean though. It didn't feel like twenty-two pages when I read it.

Ooooh I can't wait to get my hands on Devastation! The Furman Universe really is giving me trouser problems! I'm gunna wait for the complete book though. That out in December right?
Anyway, I know what you're saying about the huuuuuge fight dominating Escalation, a touch more plot wouldn't have gone a miss. But I did love the whole extended fight (no, not just 'cos it had Prowl in it! I feel a large battle (large in terms of fast action and goals, not numbers of participants), revolving around a ground-shaking confrontation between Prime and Megatron, was necissary at this point in the story. (and all right yes, it was partly 'cos Prowl was in it loads!)

Capsule review: Issue 1 is good, bodes well for the rest of the series. Recap of the story so far - neccessary and done well. The cliffhanger is a real *gasp* moment.

This is brilliant. You've got Nightbeat's combined recap and revelation of the Machination's plan, with a counterstrike shown; you have a sideplot with Autobots out to rescue Ironhide (and battle Machination); you have the continuing "humans feel ignored" bit; Megatron losing the plot and the Decepticons turning to Starscream; Skywatch and their agenda; and Sixshot attacking and, with no warning, sending Ark-19 hurtling towards a populated area. All in 22 pages! And there's still the Sideswipe subplot and the Reapers to go too...
It may just be set-up in this issue, but that's a whole lot being set up!

It did feel noticeable that this issue did "read very short". There are some decent plot ideas rattling around here, but at the moment it does feel that they are going to be hardpressed to get them to gell together or to necessarily do them all justice, bearing in mind that they are already a third of the way through the story. The action set-pieces were fairly decent and pretty well paced in terms of the cutting back and forth. My only concern is that it felt like the story didn't advance a huge amount until the last couple of pages of the issue - which does not bode entirely well given that there are only another four issues to play with Still a reasonable read, even if it didn't feel entirely satisfying in terms of its level of content. It has done enough to keep me onboard for issue three though, so clearly doing something right.
