I was really looking forward to seeing Guido back on Transformers (as I was with E J in issue 7) and the Combaticons, too.
However: This is simply an awful comic.
Sure, it's part one of a three-parter, but this first act could have been told within a quarter of the space. Three panels per page, one page showing the transformation of Vortex from vehicle to robot? Really?
Characterisation is silicon chip thin, and the Autobots are, once again, in angry teenager mode as per the first 6 issues of the Ongoing.
It's a complete waste of Guido's talents, poor guy.

Guido's put the pencils up on DA - quick someone do a remix of it and turn the awesome art into a 1 page mosaic with a decent story....

You might have to wait until issue 11's out before you can get the "story" before trying to condense it down.
As it is, issue 9 takes 22 pages to show the Combaticons up to something in a Korea and the Autobots just about to leave their base to investigate.

I'm dropping this title with #9 and I'll only be buying a copy for the AA cover.
Truly, this has been the most boring comic series of Transformers yet published. I'm not a fan of the Dreamwave era, but at least things happened.

Ongoing 1-6 weren't bad, relatively speaking, and I quite enjoyed #7. However, #8 and #9 have been utterly, utterly rubbish.
I also suspect that they've changed the paper used for the covers. The cover of #9 feels like the internal pages.

It's been a boring nine months, if I'm to be honest.
Let's review:
2005-2008: Look out! Our entire universe is being over-written by a "dead" one! AIEEEEE!
2008-2009: Oh Em Gee... the Decepticons have conquered the known universe! (Off panel.) AIEEEEE!
2010: Hot Rod stole a ship and Spike got a hair cut. AIE-- Oh, wait.

2010: Hot Rod stole a ship and Spike got a hair cut. AIE-- Oh, wait. The Transformers change designs between artists, but IDW has said Spike's hair will stay consistent. Erm.

The implication is that without the hair, we can't tell that it's Spike we're looking at. That's a worrying implication.

What was up with the bit in this issue where it says about giving Springer's people a ship? Is that just a lame fisted tie in to Wreckers (and characters who have not been in the ongoing. At all.) or just a bad way of explaining where other bots like Ultra Magnus have vanished to between issues. Again.
