I picked this, one of the more recent DC Comics animated films, last week and sat down to watch it on Saturday evening. Although very loosely inspired by the Grant Morrison/Frank Quietly story Earth Two the film doesn't really have a great deal in common with it. Keeping just the central idea of Alexander Luthor, last hero of his alternate Earth, seeking the aid of the Justice League in liberating his world from the grasp of the Justice League's evil alternates - the Crime Syndicate of America. From there the film very much goes its own way, keeping a few of the character beats but taking a very different tack with its plot.
This is probably for the best, as it gives the film its own identity and allows it to play better to the particular strengths of its own medium. It does a pretty good job of it too. The evil-doubles plot is an old saw but this does it fairly deftly, delivering a decent helping of action - this being superhero movie there is plenty of punching going on - and a reasonable stab at characterisation for its quite large cast. The voice cast is pretty good too with pretty much everyone making a pretty fair stab at things.
Very much up to the standards of plotting and dialogue of the previous Justice League animated series it retains a good mix of melodrama leavened with comedy. It also manages to squeeze in its nods to the wider DC universe without them feeling too forced. (Heck, I missed the Marvel Family reference until the end credits.). Good stuff, which helps to maintain my sense of optimism that there remains hope for US originated animated adventure stuff.
