Felt like catching a movie today. Didn't think there was anything out that I wanted to see. Didn't expect there to be anything but horror, computer animation and toilet humour. But checked the listings anyway. Found this:
It goes into my 2010 league table at number three.
1. Inception (top stuff) 2. Iron Man 2 (good for all the same reasons as the first film) 3. RED (excellent action conspiracy with dry wit and well-judged silliness) 4. Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief (fun and respectful of original Greek mythology) 5. Robin Hood (solid but could have been less rushed - want a significantly extended version for the DVD) 6. The Sorcerer's Apprentice (good sense of humour) 7. The Expendables (magnificent mayhem in third act) 8. Knight and Day (entertaining nonsense) 9. The Last Airbender (incredible special effects but little else) 10. Clash of the Titans (passes the time) 11. The A-Team (I like the falling tank scene) 12. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (mixture of good and very bad) 13. Alice in Wonderland (pointless travesty devoid of Carroll's spirit)

I did see the trailer for RED when I went to see The Expendables, and it was the only film that looked good. I shall maybe go and see this on orange wednesdays soon.

National Theatre Live's Hamlet doesn't get rated in my league table as it has an unfair advantage in following the greatest script ever written. However, the first part of tonight's double bill for Martin, the ninjas and cowboys movie 'The Warrior's Way' goes in at number six.

Ah yes, I saw The Warrior's Way last weekend. It really shouldn't work given the somewhat random mix of elements, but it really does.

In no particular order, the films I most enjoyed seeing on the Big Screen in 2010 were: Rare Exports, Inception, Tron: Legacy, Back to the Future re-release, The Expendables.

Without consulting my previous list and with only Tron and Narnia 3 to be seen before the year ends my list stands. Besides the quality of the film the big fator in the list is rewatchability,
Toy Story 3 (the best story telling of the year)
How to Tran in your Dragon ( Its almost as good as Lilo and Stitch - about the best compliment I could ever give something made by Dreamworks, Scottish viking work for some odd reason)
Scott Pilgrim (How did this film ever get through the hollywood system?)
Harry Potter ( the animated Deathly Hallows section nearly got this into the top three but it really is only half a film, I fully expect part two to reign supreme next year)
Cloudy with Chance of Meatballs (its from last year I think, but I only discovered it a few months ago, the second half is utterly surreal)
Zombieland (another from last year, but I only caught it when it came out on bluray )
A Team (they flew a tank)
Iron Man 2 (was that really this year?)
Kick Ass (the best film I probably wont rewatch very often)
Inception (finally saw it a few weeks ago and thought it wa sgreat, but can't understand the level of confusion it seems to inspire in some people, either I'm missing something or others are trying to overcomplicate it)
Night and Day (the first half is the oddest halves of film I've seen for a long time)
Megamind - (Dreamworks are growing on me as their films include less and less fart jokes)
Red
Losers
The Expendables
The Karate Kid (suprisingly good)
Percy Jackson
Robin Hood
Alice in Wonderland

From the trailer, I know with certainty that if I saw Gulliver's Travels it would be bottom of my league table and make Alice in Wonderland look like the greatest film adaptation inspired by a novel ever, in comparison.

That trailer hurt my head. Looks like lowest common denominator trash.

Not even bothering to consider it based on the Orange adverts. Unlike the Ateam orange ad that pretty much sold me on that film.

Same here. Although I can't stand Jack Black so probably would've past anyway.
Pleasingly it only entered the US charts at seventh or something.

I rewatched Scott Pilgrim the other day, it should be higher than third, but I can't put it above 1 or 2. I might have to decide on a three way tie for the top spot.

I have now seen Scott Pilgrim. Some of it worked, some of it didn't but to be fair I'm not really the target audience for it.

I can fully understand why it wasn't a massive box office hit and why some don't like it, but I've yet to see anything edgar wright has done and not loved it so it would have had to be near disasterous not to make at least my top 5.

The biggest problem with Scott Pilgrim, is the lead actor. His early scenes do nothing to suggest why any girl would be intetested in him. Chris Evans, Brandon Routh and Keiran Culkin are the best things in the film.

I'd have to say that I am another person for whom Scott Pilgrim just doesn't work at all (Not that I have any interest in the original source material anyway so that is at least consistent). The bonkers fighty-bits were fun - and had surprisingly good fight choreography - but the rest of the film found me hardpressed to work out why I was supposed to care about the vast majority of the characters.
And, just to top things off, final ranking for things I saw in 2010:-
1) Inception (intelligent, actual Science Fiction content) 2) Iron Man 2 ("Suit is bad. Drone better" good nonsense tosh, held together by an excellent cast) 2a) The Expendables (I can't say the three word - the film will beat me up, stab me and shoot exploding shotgun slugs at me. A film that aspires to being very, very good at being a tosh action movie and attains its aspirations) 4)Predators (If you are going to remake Predator then this is a very good way to do it. Solid nonsense that understands the point of the premise and executes it very well) 5) Tron:Legacy (technically very good and a very pretty film to look at. Not as engaging storywise for me as the original movie though) 6) Prince of Persia (Parkouring its way into a position no longer right at the back of the pack). 5) Scott Pilgrim vs The World (not my thing would probably be the fairest assessment that I could make) 7) Jonah Hex (Hex may have the ability to make the dead speak to him but I doubt even he could get much sense out of this. A pile of parts that it might be possible to assemble into a film, but not like that.....)
So, a couple of films sneaking in towards the end of the year courtesy of DVD that bring it down from a 100% on the "liked what I saw" to something nearer to 75%. Still, good odds and a lot better than 2009.
