I've seen enough Hollywood blockbuster films this year to warrant a little league table of best to worst. Here goes. Please add your own!
1. Inception (top stuff) 2. Iron Man 2 (good for all the same reasons as the first film) 3. Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief (fun and respectful of original Greek mythology) 4. Robin Hood (solid but could have been less rushed - want a significantly extended version for the DVD) 5. The Sorcerer's Apprentice (good sense of humour) 6. The Expendables (magnificent mayhem in third act) 7. Knight and Day (entertaining nonsense) 8. The Last Airbender (incredible special effects but little else) 9. Clash of the Titans (passes the time) 10. The A-Team (I like the falling tank scene) 11. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (mixture of good and very bad) 12. Alice in Wonderland (pointless travesty devoid of Carroll's spirit)

I've just about seen 10 films this year so I managed to cook up a top 10. I'm wondering whether to keep it a 10 or boost it to 11 after I see my next film.
Thinking of seeing action packed star vehicle The Expendables next, unless I can catch Scotty Pilgrim VS The World on preview.

Alice in Wonderland the rest I haven't seen, mostly because after the first two I mentioned I wasn't prepapred to risk them. Kick-Ass is the film of the year so far with bells on.

I heard it was great! I cant go beyond that without dwelling into spoiler territory which has already happened to me. I still want to see it though.

I'm going to see Expendables soon hopefully, I know everyone who's in it, full roles and cameos (I think, anyway), but going in relatively unknown on the actual plot.
Saw that Salt during the week, not really my thing, but I can definitely say, hopefully without being too spoilery, that it wasn't quite what I expected and anyone who saw a trailer and thought 'I know where this is going blah blah' might be quite surprised.

I hope to see the Expendables either this Wednesday or next Wednesday, depending on my financial situation and whether or not my orange wednesdays will be activated in time.
I just watched Universal Soldier: Regeneration and I was pleasantly surprised. I wasn't expecting much out of this film, so I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. JCVD can still go at his age. A few very brutal fight scenes and deaths within.
My table now stands at.
1. The A-Team 2. Universal Soldier: Regeneration 3. Toy Story 3

Pretty much the only big films I've seen this year, I missed Inception but awaiting the DVD.

I'm so stupid I forgot almost the best film of the year. It really is a almost a tie between Toy Story 3 and How to Train Your Dragon. I'm givinf TS 3 the top spot as it forms the final part of maybe the best trilogy of films ever made.

I'm givinf TS 3 the top spot as it forms the final part of maybe the best trilogy of films ever made. Hm, pity I find the animation so soulless or I might otherwise actually be able to sit through one of them and find it has a decent story and characters. (Edit: As many here know I think CGI's purpose is to make things look more real than they would otherwise look, not less real. Either go for photorealistic, and have the humans played by real humans and the toys played by real toys - which when animated look like this this or this - i.e. real toys moving around - or else if realism doesn't matter, do a proper cartoon. But this is my view and I'm in the minority and about to be swept aside by the tide of history and popular opinion.) Martin

Ah to each their own, I can never get bored watching Pixars animation (well cars maybe) tis a thing of beauty. Toy Story 3 especially. Their short films are also great, last years short that accompanied Up, I think, felt like it came straight out of Disneys 1930s line up.
Story content is even better than the animation which is why I would still watch them if they were being animated on a spectrum.

I think Paramount's upcoming 'Hasbro Factory' movie will do as you suggested for Toy Story, Martin.
I am sure Toy Story could have gone more 'photorealistic' for people if the technology was around back then when the first film came out. People are hard to animate with behaviors of hair, clothes, facial muscles etc but those barriers seem to be conquered more and more. The Incredibles may not look like real people but its a fine accomplishment as far as animating 'humans' go.
Update on my top 10:
1/ Toy Story 3 2/ The A Team 3/ Alice In Wonderland 4/ Date Night 5/ Kick Ass 6/ Knight and Day 7/ Iron Man 2 8/ Streetdance 3D 9/ Prince of Persia: Sands of Time 10/ Wild Target

I'd certainly agree with that - while I didn't think it was amazing, it certainly went off on a different direction than I'd expected. As for other films, I thought the Losers was hugely underated when it came out (and disappeared rapidly) - good action sequences and a genuinely witty script. I found Kick-Ass quite overrated, in contrast - I could see what it was going for but I didn't think it pulled it off. Best of the year has to be TS3, Inception and the hysterical Black Dynamite (if that counts as a blockbuster). My Top 10... Inception TS 3 Black Dynamite The Losers Knight & Day Iron Man 2 The A-Team Robin Hood Kick-Ass Predators

I am sure Toy Story could have gone more 'photorealistic' for people if the technology was around back then when the first film came out. The technology was always there - it's called filming real people. (And real toys. Toys coming to life is what stop-motion is ideal for. It keeps them looking like toys.) Off to see The Expendables today. Will edit my league table inserting it at the appropriate point when I get back. What number could it be??? Martin

Martin I've seen that done and it isn't pretty. Stop motion is an amazing skill, but stop motion in the real world looks wrong as would inserting stop motioned toys into live action. I bought a Lotso bear (new character from TS3) for my cousins daughter and it is disturbingly identical to what is seen in the movie. We had it for a month before giving it to and its grim expression kept freaking me and my brother out, we were waiting for it to come to start moving. Toy Story does look quite plastic in its finish compared to more recent films, (I'd love to see it rerendered at the same level as TS3) but the animations qaulity is still there if you look past the mediums then deficiencies. This approaches the arbitary as some of them are films of distinctly different genres and so comparison becomes next to impossible. However, throwing sharp objects at a board yields:-
1) Inception (intelligent, actual Science Fiction content) 2) Iron Man 2 ("Suit is bad. Drone better" good nonsense tosh, held together by an excellent cast) 2a) The Expendables (I can't say the three word - the film will beat me up, stab me and shoot exploding shotgun slugs at me. A film that aspires to being very, very good at being a tosh action movie and attains its aspirations) 3) Prince of Persia (honorably bringing up the rear in excellent company).
Hmm. Looking at this list I haven't seen that many films this year - however my hit rate is far better than last year in that I have at least liked everything I have seen, which was not an experience that I had in 2009.

I've seen loads of films the last few weeks, but nothing to trouble this thread too much - The Expendables and Scott Pilgrim both had 7/10 all over them. Going to see Resident Evil in 3D next week, but advance word from facebook status updates isn't too hot.
