Pretty sure Strip was bigger than the standard size, as was Meltdown.

According to a comment I read, the Marvel MANTA Force comic was made up of one of the storybooks (complete with some illustrations) and some of the Eagle strips. Stranger and stranger!!!!

Maybe Bluebird retained the rights. The Marvel special came two years after the Eagle strips, so IPC probably weren't bothered.

Hence why so little of licensed comics actually gets reprinted outside of those that are still a going concern. Where is my Zoids reprints Tomy?! Let someone print them!!

Yup. Outside of Transformers, Zoids in the licensed Marvel UK strip that still really holds up. Along with The Real Ghostbuters (which was a very different type of comic).
The most terrifying was Acorn Green.
Damn it. I need a comic mart visit!!!

I bought the Dark Horse Wild Space book to read those and then never got round to it. Actually, I'm still only half way through reading the actual American Marvel series. The pre-Empire ones of those were really neat in the way they weren't limited by the world building that came after.

Marts have become better in recent years at having UK comics (previously they were strangely hard to find). I suspect this is a combination of fans of certain comics hitting certain ages and also a growing appreciation and understanding of the history of UK comics in the broadband era where information is much more readily available on them. Also: more Uk comics have been coming back into print via trade formats. Remember: back when Titan started putting out collections of Marvel Transformers comics it was by no means certain there was enough of a market for them. Even famous material like the original Dan Dare comics have floated in and out of print.

Was there an evolution to this toy line? The promo comic was pretty straightforward good guys and bad guys and spaceships. Where did stink horns and bog rockets come from? Was there a shark jumped at some point?

Was there a shark jumped at some point? Shark jumping makes it sounds bad. Silly Pinwig. Okay, so the first Manta Force toy was the MANTA SHIP searching for EARTH'S TWIN PLANET Then there was the evil RED VENOM which was the Viper ship and was a stunning piece of design, never bettered to this day (seriously a complete one is awesome). Then there was the MANTA FORCE BATTLE FORTRESS which MANTA FORCE used to protect themselves from the Vipers. BUT THEN DISASTER - an ALIEN SPACECRAFT heralded the arrival of the evil MAD KARNOCK who had a giant glow in the dark brain. He used his evil KARNOID robots to gather men to EAT. The Vipers and Manta Force teamed up against them. And then EVEN MORE DISASTER - from out of the swamps rose the evil VILE STINKHORN in his BOG ROCKET. He used his STENCHOIDS to gather men to DROP IN HIS STENCH AND MELT because he was SO EVIL. He also flew around in his STINK JET.

I've been reading the Manta Force Wiki. I love the idea these were complete toy sets in a box. Reminds me of those all in one star wars sets. The cheap plastic ones that have you a whole scene, like the Hoth battle.

Blue neglects to mention the dispatch of the Astroshark from Earth to conquer these alien menaces. Given that the combined forces of MANTA Force and the Viper Squadron barely held off Mad Karnock's initial assault it is surprising that this final set featuring Earth's most advanced technology and weaponry not only defeated all the alien 'bad' guys but annihilated the entire toy line as well.
Damn it.

Damn it. I never even knew of the Astroshark until I was an adult. As a kid, I'd get the MANTA Force sets diligently for birthday and Christmas until the release of Vile Stinkhorn, when my mum declared I wasn't getting a "toilet ship". So of course this became the most desired thing in the world for me!!

Was this line really just a succession of big boxed set toys? Or were there different price points?

Multiple price points. From very cheap sets of figures to small vehicles all the way up to the big boxed sets. And of course ammunition sets...

Was this line really just a succession of big boxed set toys? Or were there different price points? There was some nice interconnectivity too. So for example the Karnoid small vehicles could all connect as landing pods to the underside of the big one

Some of the mid-range Karnoid vehicles could also mix and match with each other to make new larger vehicles. Just as the individual Karnoid robot parts could all be changed around too.
I think some of the earlier smaller sets (like the Sledgehammer and Dictator) could also be hauled by things like the Scythe and BAT.
