It's Nick Roche's first issue (artwise, I'm afraid*) on that dreadfully boring Ongoing comic this week!
I'm torn!
*I mean that as "I'm afraid he's not writing it as well

That sounds painful! And to think that a single issue of the Ongoing did that to you!

I was speaking metaphorically, like I had a dilemma.
I mean, really, a comic could only inflict a paper cut at worst.

The preview art is AWESOME! The preview writing is dull! And note that instead of completely changing the TF designs, Nick Roche is actually using someone's previous Rodimus redesign. And making it look good. Cos he's THAT sort of artist, boyo.

Also CHRIST, that alternate cover with Don's design for Kup will haunt my nightmares!

The colouring's been that style throughout the Ongoing. I've heard a lot of complaints about it.
Nick's art is lovely. The script, anything but.
Can anyone say, "Nuke The Fridge"?

The colouring does look a little on the flat side. Maybe the style of the colourist doesn't work too well with Roche's art style.

Going by the credits on the preview, it is the same colourist who has done the previous 12 issues.

...did Costa just kill a whole load of major characters in one issue? After long swathes of nothing?

...did Costa just kill a whole load of major characters in one issue? After long swathes of nothing? It's a tried and tested way of creating false drama in low-interest commercial fiction and getting members of the public interested. Kinda like the way soap operas off 3% of their cast every Christmas.

I rather enjoyed that Megatron kindly drapes the Matrix around the 'dead' Hot Rod's neck because he doesnt want it despite AHM being all about how the war was all about the Matrix. I WONDER WHAT WILL HAPPEN NEXT

If the Autobots are distressed that you stole their magical macguffin, don't give it back to them!

I don't think any Autobot showed distress about the Matrix being stolen since AHM.
Distressed Autobot 1: "Prime! The Matrix... gone. And with it, all hope."
Distressed Autobot 2: "You can possibly be thinking about surrendering to the humans. The Matrix..."
Distressed Autobot 3: "... is apparently the entire reason the war started. It's so impossibly important to us. Somehow. We must launch into space and get it back."
Optimus Prime: "Well I am already in my pyjamas."

Brilliant - and bonus points for the Professor Farnsworth quote. If you have no objections I may steal that for a future Weird Without End.

The last time somebody was offed in the Ongoing IDW had a four issue mini series written about them. Does this mean we are going to get more mini series focusing on dead characters?
Actually, now that I think about it IDW will shortly be releasing that zombie-based comic (I think its called Infestation). Maybe all of these characters were killed off so that this forthcoming comic could have a few characters in it!

According to Schmidt, Infestation is supposed to have happened before this last Combaticon arc...

That's daft. Having a whole load of dead guys would be great for Infestation.

A good issue I thought. Whether its enough to revive the franchise's fortunes after a turgid last few instalments I don't know, but this was a step in the right direction. I thought Nick's art complimented the action nicely - and it was so nice to get some action for a change rather than pages of pointless dialogue and posturing - plus the mystery character at the end was v enjoyable. Having the Matrix exert a Lord of the Rings style hold over Starscream was intriguing and at least explains why he's been content to sit on his behind on Char and do sod all for so long.
There's been a lot of talk about pointless deaths in this issue, but having read the comic I saw nothing to suggest that the characters in question are dead. It looked to me like they had been taken offline temporarily and would either recover through internal system repairs or with a bit of assistance from a medic. Nothing to get knickers in a twist about anyway.
I'd still rather see Costa shifted to the spin-offs, which suits his storytelling better IMHO, but on the evidence of this issue there is a glimmer of hope that he is taking on board fan feedback and upping his game. But the next couple of issues will be the make or break and if it doesn't work out I hope IDW will swallow its pride and reinstate Furman to the Ongoing ASAP, before the book dies a death.
He's the only writer apart from Budiansky whom has convinced me they can write a decent Transformers ongoing series.
