It is unforgivable that really, the book at least. The TV version gives you the out that the foxy-faced man and his chum are on the train in ep 1, and then the platform at the end of ep 6, which gives you a little ambiguity, but why Masefield felt the need to wreck the story by making the end explicitly a dream must be something to do with the way he felt a story about myth and magic would be accepted at the time. I choose to ignore that bit.
