I can only echo what has been said much earlier in the thread. I think that the greatest improvement has to be the Decepticon Jets. They look so much better in both humanoid and fighter modes with much crisper and more detailed sculpts, better articulation. Now if they only had proper landing gear and all had the faux-anodised canopy that Thrust has they would be pretty much perfect really.

One thing which is missed a little ITT is that a lot of the updates have less realistic alt modes than their original G1 counterparts given their Diaclone heritage. What we gain in articulation and detail, we lose in real world likeness due to modern licensing laws.
Are people happy for this as long as the alt mode looks realistic but not exactly like a production car/plane/etc? Or do people prefer their alt-modes to be like BT and Alternity?

I don't mind wither way honestly, if they are licensed vehicles, then cool, if not, then it's not that big a deal to me

I do prefer "real world" likeness as much as possible.
Making up vehicles, especially "space" or "futuristic" or "cybertronian" is like cheating in my book.
That's what really put me off Transformers in the late eighties with all those Headmasters toys and such. It was more of a challenge to "hide" the robot parts when a realistic vehicle mode was needed.
For example: Trailbreaker and Hoist... realistic pickup trucks, with robot bits well hidden underneath. Kup... "futuristic" pickup truck, with two weird, useless things sticking out the back AKA legs.
With that in mind, the new Kup, looking a lot more realistic in vehicle mode, with a proper flatbed and folding tailgate is a hu-uge improvement over the original!

I'm always far more interested in the robot mode and don't care about cars in real life so not too fussed if they look 'real' or not in alt mode, so long as they look interesting and/or are fun to play with.

I don't care about licesnsed accurate vehicles but I do prefer alt modes that are meant to be Earth forms for the same reason as Graham. I still enjoy the robots in disguise concept which is probably one of the main reasons I still buy any of the movie line.

I actually enjoy weird looking car things more than licensed cars, which just look more boring to me which is one of the reasons that Binaltech/Alternators left me cold.

Binaltechs bored me too after the first few, but 26 years on the original toys still amaze me when I see the realistic cars that don't look out of place in any box of diecast toy cars, but that can turn into cool robots too.

Ball joints - so when your toy breaks its easy just to repair, unlike the solid internal plastic connect from the original - where you need a screw driver to slot parts back in.

Sunstreaker. The original was my first TF so it hurts to say it but... he wasn't very good was he? Whereas all the new versions are missing is a missile to stick in his wrist, really. Be nice if a few of the new Generations toys had that feature... Grapple, Trailbreaker, Hoist... (Yeah yeah, dream on!)

Am I imagining it or was there a Transformer recently that had a hand that could rotate back into its forearm with a weapon replacing it?

Cyclonus could do that with his targetmaster, and TFA Lockdown could have his hood added onto his arm to give him a hook or a chainsaw, oh and Movie 1 Optimus had that weapon that goes over his hand
