What a Hum-Dinger of a question?! (more I think about it the more I realise there's actualy so many great characters to choose from!)
Who's the BEST character 'they've' ever come up with?
You've got to look initially at your more well known characters- Optimus, Megatron, Bumblebee, Starscream etc.
But are they necessarily the BEST character that has ever come out of the Transformers line?
My two pence-
STARSCREAM
Naturally Prowl is high on my list, but whilst I love him as a character, I do not assume for a second he could be considered the best character ever. A character I've always enjoyed seeing up to his usual tricks is Starscream, the traitorous lieutenant waiting in the wings for his chance at gaining power. I enjoy stories like Enemy Within or the Underbase saga and its build-up, where we get to see Starscream up to his traitorous ways, but going about it in a more intelligent, considered and patient way. So whereas as individual characters I'd probably go for the Prowls, Jazzs, Shockwaves and Soundwaves, in terms of overall character appeal and entertainment value, Starscream is lot of fun.
PROWL
I've always been drawn to the cool, clam, thoughtful approach of Prowl. Mr Roche's magnificent portrayal of Prowl added so much depth to the character, so much scope for delving into his, not darker side as such, but the side of him that will do whatever it takes to win the war, was the Prowl I'd waited all my Transformers life to see. That, coupled with Prowl's obvious disappointment with loosing his command on Earth help create a doubt in my mind about who Prowl is, and opened up new possibilities into who that character may be.
BLUDGEON
Another character which has only recently leaped off the pages to me is Bludgeon as Decepticon Leader, since I've caught up with various stories I'd missed out on in my youth. Charismatic, cunning, and in Stormbringer we see him in stepping beyond the normal bounds of a what it is to be a Decepticon, and see him seeking a more complex solution in the further evolution of the Transformers race. This added a further element to the character for me. He's a mover and a shaker.
BUMBLEBEE
I'm not a huge fan, but there's something about the weaker robot striving to be accepted, and perhaps over-reaching himself sometimes, and then realising he was valued all along story that appeals.
WHEELJACK
"Mad scientist of the Autobots" says it all. There is so much scope there to see Wheeljack being more of a mad scientist and perhaps getting into trouble in a Reed-Richard's-Machine-Going-Wrong kind of way.
Wha you think, eh?
