I was able to nip out at lunchtime and quickly do most of my Chrimbo shopping. I now need not go near the city centre shops again this month and the few odds and sods still to be picked up can be done so painlessly locally on Saturday morning. Chrimbo shopping: swift and hassle free. As it should be.
In other news, got sent home an hour early from work due to SNOW CHAOS as Lothian Buses cancelled all routes. This is actually the first time in my working life I've ever been sent home early due to weather. The novelty of it is ludicrously exciting.

Hello sportsfans!!!
Finished a long run of busy shifts. Coupla days off now. Decorating-a-mundo required. We're hosting Christmas lunch, so gotta press on and get it finished! Mrs Shockprowl and her big ideas!
Be safe in the snow, cyber-chumbs. Heh, that sounds like a TV safety-add: "Don't risk slips, and broken hips, Beeeeeeee SnowSafe!".

I made it into work this morning, although the snow was falling thick and fast in Falkirk (clearly the defense cuts have bitten too deeply, we can no longer afford funding for Gi Joe and so they are unable to stop Cobra from completing their weather satellite and menacing us all with a deep freeze......). I discovered that I was one of only two people from outside the immediate area to make it in this morning.
I kept an eye on the transport and watched as the bus companies cancelled first all of the buses going outside of Edinburgh, then the major roads in Central Scotland were declared closed, and then they cancelled all the buses within Edinburgh as well "until further notice". At this point, with the snow still falling as it had been since I woke up at six-thirty I decided to take no further risks and, having spoken to our Director, opted to work from home this afternoon. The first time I have actually done that so it was a very novel experience.
Hopefully things will begin to sort themselves out a bit in coming days. Although the proposed minimum night temperature of -12 for Tuesday night doesn't make that seem entirely hopeful.

Here it's been -10 the past few nights and still cold during the day. Really bad outdoors (and slippery) but OK inside. Except for at work yesterday as the heating was bust.

It is meant to warm up above zero here towards the weekend so hopefully that'll give us Scots a bit of (temporary no doubt) relief!

At this rate I think Scotland might have to accede to Cobra's demands and pay the ransom by the weekend. This morning most of the major roads in the Central Belt still seem to to be closed, and there are no trains from Falkirk running to Edinburgh at all. (But then, given that we are forecast to have a daytime maximum temperature of -6 celsius, and a minimum night temperature of -12C then perhaps that should not entirely surprise me). Apparently the pavements in Edinburgh are like glass and are actively dangerous, according to what my boss tells me.
Another unexpected days leave today, the last uncommitted days holiday that I have. After this I will be having to take unpaid leave if this keeps up.

I've just looked out my window and noticed that hanging from the guttering of the house across the road is an array of icicles, the longest of which appears to be somewhat over a metre in length. I would not want to be under that when it fell.
I think I will stay in today. Christmas shopping is done, the weather is too cold to go as far as the post office to post my international Christmas card, so I am better off remaining inside where it is warm.

I saw a small icicle hanging from my wheelie bin as I can home. I snapped it off. Then I felt an inexplicable wave of guilt, as if I'd stepped on a snail or something. Bizarre! Apparently the pavements in Edinburgh are like glass and are actively dangerous, according to what my boss tells me. Actively? You mean they're not waiting for you to step on them and slip over, but actually coming to get you? That's some mean pavements! Martin

It's true. I was chased by many pavements on my work-related travels in the Edinburger today. Luckily, I had my grit-pack, which is like a Ghostbuster proton-pack and thus dealt with them swiftly.

The worst bit is, the wasp managed to escape my wrath and is still lurking in my room somewhere!

Piglet's got this fantastic all in one, coloured spotted, snow-suite-type-thing. THE cutest in it. She looks like one of them off one of the Abba videos.

The worst bit is, the wasp managed to escape my wrath and is still lurking in my room somewhere! That made me laugh, not sure why. The ice is just mad around here. Almost a week since the last snow and people are still having to dig cars out and more oddly having to dig them in to parking spaces. Only the main roads are remotely clear. Side treets are like going off road, in some places the ice is up to a foot thick then drops away to a patch of clear road. Very bumpy and incredibly dangerous. The only plus is a occasional sense of community it creates. My Dad and Mum were trying to get out of his parking space at 4am and it just wouldn't move they were trying for 20 minutes without success when a neighbour got up and came and helped them out. A street over which is used as a cut through is one of the off road ones and the people down their must be used to stuck cars trying to get down it as they flooded out when a car got stuck in front of my brother.

UPDATE: Last night I went to sleep... but a wasp was sitting on my pillow exactly where my head went, and it stung me repeatedly in the head Ouch. Literally. The only plus is a occasional sense of community it creates. Strangers do seem to say good morning to each other a lot more when the weather's freezing. I suppose the recognition that we're both cold gives us something in common. Karma to Ken for his tree. Martin

It is certainly interesting underfoot. Less of a thaw here in Falkirk than there is in Edinburgh - the difference in the going underfoot was very marked when I got off the train this evening. Less sliding on slick ice and more crunching through hard packed frosted snow.
Fortunately some sanity has descended on the transport network this end of the week. Although there were no trains at Falkirk Grahamston when I got there this morning I was able, after a stomp up to Falkirk High Station get a train running through from Glasgow to Edinburgh thus getting to work only a half-hour later than planned (or two days and one half-hour later taking into account my original intention of being in work on Tuesday morning).
We still have some impressive icicles hanging from peoples houses around here - metre and a half spikes of ice hanging from some of the gutters. I would not want to be under any of those when they fall I can tell you that.
