Sirs,
I'm looking to take a few holidays in the UK this year. Weekends away and some weeks.
I really fancy the Malverns, south of Brum, as I've been listening to a bit of Vaughn Williams recently. I reckon Devon would be a safe bet too.
Look around you. Would you recommend the area where you live as a holiday destination? Why?
As always I value your opinions on this matter. I have to reference your previous views on DVD players and Minidiscs as shining examples, which helped me no end.
Elliott.

Devon is superb. Train journey from Exmouth to Paignton has to be done, you get to ride up both sides of the Ex estuary and then the section running along the sea front at Dawlish. Donkey Sanctuary in Sidmouth and Mexican near to Exmouth station recomended. Up on the North Coast the Linton & Linmouth clifftop railway is well worth a ride as is the Minehead to Barnstaple steam railway. I can thoroughly recomend Weymouth after my trip their last year - Portland totally blew me away, incredible place. Weymouth isn't far from Monkey World so.......

I like the Lake District. Lots of nice boat trips and walks from the small town of Windermere (which has a railway station), for example. Grasmere (nearby) may be the most picturesque body of water and is easily walk-round-able. Martin

I quite like Whitby, but only in the out-of-season times. I stayed there recently in early September (as I recall) and had a wonderful time. In season it gets horrendously crowded (and I would personally avoid the periods of the Goth Weekends for the same reason) but a bit out of season it is a fascinating place if you like a bit of history - there is a strong association with the sea, a fascinating audio tour of the abbey, some wonderful cliff-walks and you are well placed for the moors as well (Heartbeat country my mother calls it - I just call it an amazing landscape), there is also a working steam railway close by which I personally love (worth checking when they are running in steam because they don't do it all year).
It is a little bit laid-back and Seaside-towny though, so it is probably not the place if you want a high-octane vacation.
I wouldn't recommend where I actually live for a holiday though, and apparently neither would Falkirk Tourist Information seeing as they gave up and moved their office from being in Falkirk to being at the Falkirki Wheel (a.k.a the only place in the near vicinity that anyone bothers to visit).
