The upcoming Classics (or whatever this partic version is called) Sergeant Kup figeroon has got me thinking of ranking systems again. I thought I'd had it all worked out. But, them saying Kup's a 'Sergeant', inferring there's officers and enlisted within the two Transformers armies (or at least the Autobot army), got me thinking. Kup's character (Kup is an old fave of mine- Ha! 'Old' fave, getit?!), suites being a Sergenty/Gets stuff done/go to for help kinda 'bot. I wasn't happy with his portrail as a Big Leader type in IDW. If Kup is a 'Sergeant', what would his rank be on a techspec, and how does this effect other TFs ranks? Whom are enlisted and whom are officers? Why is my beer glass empty? Discuss.

I'd wonder whether the tech specs have any correllation to rank at all - you could be intelligence, strong or anything else etc. and not be an officer of any type.

1987's Targetmaster Kup was rank 5, while 1986's original animated-Movie Kup was rank 8 on his tech-specs, which tells me that for Marvel comics purposes that he only had the rank of a normal Sideswipe/Sunstreaker-type warrior under Fortress Maximus in the present day, but he then worked his way up the system until his best pal became Prime in the Movie, at which point he was a member of the High Command. Attempts to make sense of the tech-specs ranks can be found here and here. (The notes attempt to rationalise certain contradictions, such as Landmine being introduced in the comic as "Pretender Group Leader", Windcharger being team leader in 'Dinobot Hunt', etc. Ranks are assigned at whim to non-toy characters appearing in the Marvel comics.) I'm pretty sure Drift has a rank of '11' thus outranking every other Transformer ever!

Worth taking into account the fact that we seem to have evidence of a Commissioned/Non-Commissioned divide in the Autobot army - so the Rank characteristic may only represent the characters standing within the given track. So in theory a Rank 8 Chief Master Seargent might be Rank 8 or 9 on the Non-commissioned/enlisted track, but outranked by a newly created Lieutenant of Rank 4 or 5. Woe betide the newly-made Lieutenant who fails to realise the vast experience said Rank 8 non-com must have accumulated to reach that rank mind you. With that in mind by 2005-6 Kup might be filling a position similar to the Seargent Major of the Marine Corps ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sergeant_Major_of_the_Marine_Corps ) This may be another way of looking at the ranks of various Team Leaders and whatnot, depending on how similar we think Autobot military organisation might be to the various human models. I think they just handed out ranks without any real regard to anything, just to give some a superior position of sorts other than "gunner" or "warrior" etc. that many Transformers have as a description of what their role is.

The only true rank is the Rank Film gong.
