Which "Sub Group" of Transformers from 1984 is the best?

All four of these were my fave's at some point in the early years, but the Spy Cassettes were my first - Robo Machines had done vehicles before and the idea of robot-tapes was different at the time. It also gave us robot animals too which was unique as well as the play value with Soundwave.

Aw, great thread!!!
I loved 'em all to! Blow my mind apart so they did. Although I love my Strike Planes, I've voted Autobot Cars, 'cos they're the most varied and individual.
Although who ever decided to turn a casset into mechanoids is a freakin' genious and welcome to marry my sister any day.

Not the planes. One toy endlessly repainted.
Minibots are nice, and tapes are great and they're animals BUT for my money the Cars for the sheer number and variety. DIACLONE RULES!

I loved the minibots when I was wee because I could fit them in my pocket and take them to Mass or when we went visiting. The adults would talk and I would fiddle. I liked the tapes which were even more portable (they would sometimes come along so the minibots had someone to fight) but the lack of variety in the object modes made me less interested. My mum liked that it was £2.99 for two toys The Autobot cars were great for what they were but when you're 4 and your mates are all 5-7 they inevitably ended up with something snapped off. I don't think any of my original Autobot cars are in one piece except Grapple, who was missing a screw out of the box so his head kept falling off. My Snarl had the same problem as there was a screw missing from his hip and his right leg wasn't actually attached. I actually liked the original Strike Planes and had Thundercracker then Starscream, and saved up for months to buy Skywarp only to come home with Targetmaster Blurr, having missed the boat by said months. Even as a kid I felt the lack of articulation hurt them and having to put the fists and guns back on was a chore, especially as the missiles kept popping out. I loved the look, and the characters, but wasn't fond of them as toys. I think the Minibots have won it. -Nick

Diaclone cars all the way. I didn't have many of them as a kid but I cherished them dearly. The fact that they transformed into actual vehicles that one could conceivably see on the road (someone in my town owned must have owned a Porsche 911 as I saw it around every so often, although sadly it was not white) made the whole Robots in Disguise thing that bit more immediate. I couldn't afford many of them at the time, or the grey imported french Diaclone stuff that showed up a few years later. (If I had a time machine I sometimes think my second trip would be to go back in time and make sure my younger self had fifty quid or so to spend in the local toymaster store when the grey imported Diaclone and Macross stuff was doing the rounds. ;-) ).
I liked the Mini-Autobots, but couldn't shake the feeling that they looked a bit more like Penny Racers than real vehicles (but then, we didn't know their heritage in those days). The tapes were one of those things that didn't gell with me until much later, when I got a second-hand Ravage from someone (my first secondary market Transformers purchase in about 1986).
My runner-up spot here was never really in doubt was it?

I think minibots, I probably didn't get any till around 1988-89, but Gears from a friend and then Woolworths chinese releases caught me well up. Plus because I didn't have any for so long playing with those of the few friends who owned Transformers made them all the more exotic to me. Something they still share with the original 6 pretenders.

I liked the Mini-Autobots, but couldn't shake the feeling that they looked a bit more like Penny Racers than real vehicles What blows my mind is that Cliffjumper is supposed to be this car. (If you don't believe it, try squashing the image to 50% in the horizontal - or just look at the picture sideways from the edge of the screen - and you'll see.) Comic and cartoon artists invariably drew him squashed up like the toy, but this is really what he would look like, and how he should be drawn. Martin

Martin D-do you mean that there isn't an actual car like Cliffjumper's G1 appearance?

I knew Cliffjumper was super-deformed, I just didn't realise by how much! That is one sleek, long car! And he is so stubby!

Think of the humiliation. In reality you're a powerful Autobot warrior, the same size as Sideswipe and Sunstreaker, and transforming into a similarly sleek sports car. Then they bring out toys of you all. Sideswipe and Sunstreaker get Diaclone treatment, you get a squashed up deformed plastic minibot toy. As a result of it, every animator and comic artist draws you as smaller than the others, and about as sleek as a Volkswagen. It's not fair!
I am moved to begin a campaign for drawing Cliffjumper properly! Sign your pledge here, artists of TMUK!

Do we think Hubcap should look like that too?

A tough poll, as it goes... but I went for the Spy Cassettes in the end. I always loved the idea of such innocuous objects transforming into terrifying little robots/creatures. Plus the interactivity with Soundwave is another bonus.

Do we think Hubcap should look like that too? Of course! It's either that or say that when they scanned the Earth vehicle to get their disguise mode, there was a terrible corruption of data that squashed the image all along one axis. Martin

Maybe it was a widescreen signal but the Ark only had 4:3 tellies?
