In other other other news, my spring break plans to visit Singapore and Vietnam with a group fell through, so I decided "feck it" and looked up flights to Japan. Got a good deal and at least two other guys interested. We fly out the end of next month! Hooya! In other other other other secret news, something is apparently going to happen over here next month. Given what's happening in the rest of the region you can probably guess what. Some of us students are getting involved- it may not make a difference to policy but you only live once, right? -Nick Just to check, where in the world are you at the mo Nick?

I have sent out safety check notices via e-mail and Facebook. His last activity online that I can see was 16 hours ago. I know not where.

Hi Sportsfans!
3 busy nights saving lives and breaking hearts are done. Commence prep for chinese takeaway and CSI! Life don't get much better! Although the toweling robe I'm currently wearing is a bit smelly (yes, toweling robe, I am middle class don't forget. Moving onto a smoking jacket soon).
Good luck folkes who need it with jobs, road works and the like. And glad you're feeling a tab better Big Phil.

I can confirm that he is alive as he updated on Facebook 11 minutes ago. -Ralph Good to know. I have had the fun of buying new shoes this weekend. Never a process my wallet likes as my oddly shaped feet narrow my options sufficiently that I am a bit of a captive audience. In fact, like most of my maternal family there are only two brands of shoe I have much hope of wearing. Fortunately one of the few outlets in Scotland for one of the brands is in Edinburgh so, once the snow had eased a bit and was no longer bucketing down quite so hard on Saturday I trooped through to see what I could see. After about half an hour/ forty-five minutes of trying various things on with the help of an excellent shop assistant I managed to find something that is wide enough for my toes to fit into without feeling like it is flapping loose at the heel. My wallet screamed in rage as it was lightened by a sizeable chunk of a ton, but my feet thanked me most kindly. That done I treated myself to a R.E Howard book for the princely sum of a pound before dondering back home to do some watching of films in the evening. Went out this morning (in my old shoes as I no longer have to worry about keeping them in decent nick) for a wander through the snow before it all melted and disappeared (mostly gone now as I suspected it would be). I was very surprised to find that we have a pair of either shags or cormorants which have taken up residence on the canal. Not sure what the herons are going to make of these interlopers poaching in their territory. Could be that some mediation is going to be needed there. Karl

Thanks to 'The Amazing Egg Timer' I am at last able to do something which has mostly eluded me in my adult life: the ability to boil an egg yet retain a nice runny centre to dip my toast in. Hurray. I was able to have two splendid soft boiled eggs with toast this very evening without stress (I usually can't get get the timing right). Hurray!

Sorry about the lack of contact, guys. I am indeed alive and neither languishing in a Saudi jail or squished under a Japanese building. After heavy coercion from those around me I elected to stay home during the 'day of rage' to see how it panned out. I didn't want to be a white face in an arab crowd looking like some foreign instigator. As much as it pains me to say it, it wasn't my fight.
The protest group in Jeddah was actually outnumbered by undercover police- they arrived to set up and just got arrested and bundled straight into vans. The Facebook group organising the protests is now blocked inside the country. My flatmate got bailed by his dad but he had his passport confiscated and has to go to court tomorrow. He literally hasn't done anything (although that certainly hasn't stopped Saudi authorities before) so God willing he won't be looking at prison time for standing in a place where some people on the internet had talked about holding a peaceful protest about the gross corruption in the local government. Sad state of affairs, boys.
Meanwhile I'm busy as hell working on stuff for the "Welcome to Britain" night we're holding on Wednesday that I have somehow managed to wind up in charge of. Punter-wrangling, advertising, producing material, making videos, finding music and baking snowballs for upwards of 300 guests has left me physically and emotionally drained, political environment and friend's impending trial notwithstanding.
Oh yeah, and I have to find a company to take me on during the summer. And I have to keep working on our experimental setup. And I think I've still got lectures and projects and exams and shit to do. Hmm.
So... that's why I've not been about lately. Sorry!
-Nick

Glad to hear that you are alright Nick. It sounds like you made the prudent choice regarding the Day of Rage anyway. (And that you kind of have your hands full as it is).

Yes good choice Nick.
A two month head ache has finally gone today when Tesco Mobile rang to give me the unlocking code for my new phone. Should have taken no more than 4 weeks, took nearly 10 and loads of very cranky phone calls.
Still I can now finally use it and more importantly stop using the old one.
Edit: And I've still not heard back about the job. Phoned them on Friday and was told due to a huge response they are still processing the applications. The wait continues.
