Hard choice between Pretender Monsters, Classics and Figures. All subgroups this year were totally unlike anything we had before from the Micromaster stations to the maustached wrestlers! All of it totally out of scale with eachother too!

Hehe! Yeah, it was as though there were two entirely different Transformers toylines running that year!

Didn't the 89 & 90 leaflets have Micromasters on one side and then something else (Pretenders in 89 Action Masters in 1990) on the reverse?

They did indeed.
Though the US catalogue has a Powermaster Optimus Prime slapped in the middle, and our one had the Triggerbot/cons instead of the Pretender Monsters.

How can it not be Micromasters? Such value for money! So many new figures! So little storage space needed!

Which "Sub Group" of Transformers from 1989 is the best? Argh! You have a thirst for knowledge that is beyond quenching. Hm, this was a poor year. Micromaster Patrols were the best of a bad bunch. And they weren't that bad actually, come to think of it. Martin

Hmm love me any kind of Micromasters, but due to vote splitting they lose out to Pretender Classics. They might not have been the best toys ever, not even that year, but After being a Transformers fan for 3, 4 or 5 years I finally owned a Jazz, my favourite at that time, Bumblebee, my favourite when I was little(r) and Starscream so getting them was a big deal to me. And by Pretender standards you got decent little toys, besides Jazz' bonnet sitting to high to see his head they were all decent representations.
Edit: Best stand alone toy was Countdown.

Although I didn't own any at the time, PRETENDER CLASSICS!!!!!!
Classic characters given a new life! The first time it had happened! (apart from Optimus that is). I always wished they'd continued with another wave or two. Prowl, Wheeljack, Soundwave. Thundercracker and Skywarp would have been easy to do!

Micromasters rule! However Micromaster bases ruled even more when you add the patrols to them!
Have always loved my Countdown, which i still own 80% of. Love it so much i even bought a second one MIB.

My problem with the Pretenders of this year is that they were very partformery. I don't mind simple Transformers, I do mind it when half their alt mode detaches as an 'accessory'
However the shell sculpts were great. I think if the transforming shells were better executed they'd be huge favourites

I remember getting Gunrunner as a kid and was so disappointed by the "jet" mode being the weapon off the top of the shell/car.

I quite like the Mega Pretenders. Something about them appeals to me. Not the current price tag obviously....

I imagine a lot of people would be disappointed to get Bludgeon and find he doesn't actually have a sword (nor Octopunch a trident, etc.).

Not transforming shells, instead the robot becomes a backpack for the figure, but they still look great. The latest is Skullgrin.

You know that is a great way to reinvent the concept of Pretenders into a workable system. It essentially makes them Powermasters in a way lol. Never thought of doing that to WFC Megatron, if i did i'd have bought a spare and tried a Skullgrin inner robot like that.

He does mention he wanted to make them proper pretenders, but it is impossible to convert an action figure into a shell. As toys, I'd prefer the Pretender to be a shell, or at least interact more with the figure, rather than just plug into the back; but as a custom it is incredible work.

That is an incredible custom! That WFC Megatron mould really suits Skullgrin.

Anything but Pretender Classics. This was just before they re-released original Grimlock and Jazz in the UK, and every child who got to stand their Classic Hero next to a mate's Pretender Classic of the same character and compared the two in quality realised how far toy standards had fallen in a few short years.

Martin In retrospect you are correct, but for a 5-10 year old the 1-2 years between Classic Pretenders and Classics was an incredibly long time, better an inferior version for that time than no version at all. And thats what makes them great. It also wouldn't surprise me to find out that sales of them were the reason behind the Classics launch the following year.

I was glad of the release of the Pretender Classics... it meant the storyline could return to older/original characters in the Marvel comics!

If you'd asked me at the time I would probably have said that I didn't particularly have any interest in the 1989 toys - always assuming I knew which ones they were, hard to tell when the toys from the year before are still on the shelves and this years toys will likely be around until next year at least.
But in the years since the ones that have really won me over as toys are the Micromaster Patrols. Fun little toys with a nice array of different alt-modes.

I can't vote.
This was the end of the line for me. I had no interest in the Pretenders themselves, since the robots on the inside were so poor. The Micromasters were the nail in the coffin; a plethora of characterless drones, with simple, one-second transformation sequences. At that point what I had with the Transformers was over; it was time to get interested in forthcoming World Cup instead.
