A lot of Transformers came in threes.
For example, Firecons, Autobot Powermasters, Double Targetmasters, each of the two series of Strike Planes, 1988 Headmasters, 1986 Autobot Cars, Triggerbots... and so on.
I wonder why that was.

I've often thought this. Also, corresponding Decepticons sometimes came in twos, the 1986 Jets or 'Con Powermasters, or in a reduced number, like the original Headmasters, 3 as oposed to the 'Bot's 4.
As for 3s, it's a decent number for a group dynamic, me thinks. And you can get three differentish toys outa the same, or similar, mould. Any more than 3 from the sameish mould wouldn't have looked as good.

I always figured that there were less Decepticons because they were so much more powerful than the 'Bots... especially when I was a kid... Only three Decepticon jets against ALL those cars?!

Any idea how many toys were in a case back then? Perhaps there were trios because they were packed in equal multiples.

Hmmmm. There's 3 Autobot and Decepticon Targetmasters, each supplemented by the repacked 86 toys.....
The Pretenders were sets of three too

1988 was the year of trios in the UK (Pretenders, Sparkabots, Firecons, Double Targetmasters, small Headmasters, Triggerbots, Triggercons, Autobot Powermaster cars).
Very few teams of four prior to Micromasters.

Dynamic I guess. Hence why the Animated Dinobots were cut down to a trio.
Trios are also easier to collect and complete. I also wondered that with the Brainmasters being a shortcut to having a gestault.

Or, in the case of Nightbeat, Siren and Hosehead in the comics, two distinctive characters and a spare wheel. Martin

I did think of that, although they had very little time to bond together. Were'nt the Dinobots a trio in the G2 toy lineup? ===KEN

So, who would make up everyone's favorite Trio?
Prowl, Jazz and Wheeljack I feel would have a good group dynamic.
Any goofy Trios?

There was always more Autobots than Decepticons - which makes the current over-abundance of Autobots in RTS almost more realistic.
Decepticons are warriors and love to fight. Autobots by on large are peaceful and don't love to fight. If they had an even amount on each side, the Autobots would loose. This way they have the numbers to overwhelm - well overwhelm if they'd stop thinking about how they look.
On threesomes, and away from being with Japanese twins, i'd have to say the Omnibots.

Trios were great - especially the TV advert for them with the big mouthed cartoon girl singing really loud that she wants a Trio and she wants one now!
