Which "Sub Group" of Transformers from 1987 is the best?

HEADMASTERAH !!
Fortress Maximus is a Headmaster. How then can you vote otherwise?
But what a year for sub groups. There's a great set of gear here.

As a kid I was completely turned off by pretty much most of the 1987 range as Transformers suddenly stopped being highly detailed "model" vehicles and became chunky, plasticky, gimmick-driven toddler toys.
That said, I've voted for the Technobots, as I liked the Special Teams.

Tough choice between Throttlebots and Duocons (whom I loved as a nipper) but the latter just pips it.

Duocons would have been better if the right name was on the right toy.
Technobots are awesome.
As a nipper/14 year old I loved all the sci fi/cybertronian vehicle modes and the Robot Beasts.
87 is probably the worst year to be a UK fan missing out on Fort Max, Clones (4 toys), Punch/Counterpunch, Slugfest & Overkill, The Monsterbots (3 toys) Thats 11 toys.
Actually that's rubbish
86..... 5 Predacons, 5 new tapes, Trypticon, Sky Lynx. 12 toys
85..... Whirl & Roadbust, Barrage, Ransack, Venom, Chopshop, Blaster, Perceptor,Shockwave Constructicons. 15. 85 had it

Targetmasters or Technobots... I had to go with the Targetmasters. My love of the Technobots has been a recent thing, but as a kid I had to have them gunbots. The Headmasters seemed to be pretty poor robot modes, even without the need to hide a head. Except for Brainstorm. For some reason he works.
I think we did get Punch, though. I know Ed had it, but whether thats from this year or whether he got imported later, a la the Motorvators and OVERLORD, or what.

Fortress Maximus is a Headmaster. How then can you vote otherwise? So Fortress Maximus comes under Headmasters, while the Horrorcons are counted separately? Doesn't sound right to me. Is Scorponok a Horrorcon? I'm voting Monsterbots. Never played with one, but I think they look best from the pictures. Martin

TERRORCONS!!!!!!!
Goofy, yet a bit scarry, freaky monster transformers! The style of Transformers from 87 onwards turned me off as well, back in the day, but even then, I still liked the weirdness of the Terrorcons, and the 3 I got were some of the last TFs I ever bought. Now complete (twice over, thankyou very much, just in case!), they remain some of my fave G1 toys.

G's just being picky - look at how he separated out the various Micromaser groups in the 89 & 90 polls.

I voted for the Horrorcons. They combine the Headmaster and Triple-Changer gimmicks, are good, chunky toys with beautiful colour schemes, and have the added benefit of animal modes. It's all I can do to resist the temptation to pay a tonne of money to get them now. 87 is probably the worst year to be a UK fan missing out on Fort Max, Clones (4 toys), Punch/Counterpunch, I had (Counter)Punch and the Decepticon Clones for my birthday that year. They were bought off the shelf rather than imported.

Are you sure it was that year? Grey imports of both of these, probably Chinese stock, were in heavy circulation in the UK c1994.
Either way they never got an official UK release in 87.

Although Wingspan and Pounce have vanished into the ether, (Counter)Punch is sitting on one of my bookshelves. They were all originals and arrived in the 80s. (I can't remember which year exactly, but my birthday is December so I presume it was 1987 heading into 1988.)

And then there's Paul's Jafcon Prime. Come to think of it, all of he Japanese reissue Primes that made it over here. Did they have the US 87 pack in leaflef with them?

My vote went to the Throttlebots. DON'T YOU JUDGE ME! No judgment here... Wow... this has to be one of the most evenly spread polls yet!

There's a lot of good choices. But at this point the right one is winning

We need another vote for something to become second place otherwise Clash of the Sub Groups will be ruined!

Done! Hard choice again - the Horrocons were very nice toys and they were made from a better quality plastic than the other Head/Targetmasters. Targetmasters were also amoung my faves - remember going around houses selling strawberries for my dads greengrocers to raise the money to buy Pointblank. But I went for the Throttlebots as although they weren't the best toys, I have fond memories having great adventures with them around the house.

Yeah, the Throttlebots were fun... and durable.
Wideload would charge across the edge of the dining room table and land on the Decepticons on the carpet below. I would pay to see that in a Michael Bay movie.

Odd. But I've heard of odder rogue imports. G says he saw Fort Max for sale. My friend had all sorts that I never saw on sale here. My knowledge is far from encyclopedic about what was never released over here, but I know I've never heard of anyone other than him having Tryticon, for example. I have no idea. I wouldn't have taken the slightest bit of notice at the time. Although I can see the Decepticon clones' in my head, I don't know what I'd be looking for to know that it's the US rather than UK version.

Mine had both the symbols, Phil. The one on the chest revealed a bird on Wingspan and a puma head on Pounce.
