They're freaks aren't they? Poor misguided fools!!! I pitty them. But there's more of them than there are of us. So what of the non-collectors that you know? Do they know you collect 'stuff'? Do you reveal to them just how much you collect? And what is 'acceptable' collecting to a non-collector, what amount of collecting would they consider 'not weird'. Although Mrs Shockers is a TRANSFORMERS HATER, even she understands the nostalgic/playfulness that drives me to collect Transformers, Marvel and the like (although she doesn't understand why I have to collect so many... ;D). For my part, very few people, infact if I think about it, only Mrs Shockers outside of The Hub, know I collect anything beyond the 'Masterpiece' type level of 'collectible', ie figures that are obviously made for the adult collector as oppose to the eg Classics or Movie style toys. I'm not sure why I don't tell more people. Prob 'cos it doesn't really come up. So what do you think, Cyber-chumbs? What's 'acceptable' collecting to the crazy breed that are non-collectors, and how many people know of your collecting? Answers on a postcard to London, PO Box W12 6RJ. The most interesting answer as decided by our panel of experts will receive a free G1 Seaspray toy. The last paragraph above may or may not be true.

I don't hide my collection or the fact that I collect Transformers/comics from people at all, most people actually find it quite cool, especially when I can call on some obscure info randomly (I have a near eidetic memory for facts)

We should not hide who we are, no matter what.
People who claim to love us should love us unconditionally.
We are all equal and should be treated equally, no matter our denomination; whether G1, Beast Wars or Movie collectors.
United we stand!

I don't really hide it from anyone who gets to know me, but I don't bother to advertise it either. I think most people outside of my immediate family and one or two friends would be shocked by how much stuff I've got though.
Truth is most people are as obsessed with one thing or another, whether its Big brother/Xfactor etc a persons chosen soap, football team, video console or the tech guys who have to own every new release of everything apple makes. And most of them take as much time and or money as being a fan of Transformers.
Its when I find someone with no discernible interests that I'm freaked out.

I don't hide my interests. Yet people still mock openly. Oh well.

My home is littered with things I collect. If anyone finds it 'odd' thats their problem....I'm glad to be an individual and not simply following the herd and into football....I also tell people who mock it to bugger off. I don't really talk about what I collect in depth even if they seem interested and ask about it. On forums like this, when the mood is carefree and less anal I'll chat about things but thats about it. I've noticed on American G.I.JOE forums they really are anal over things....it takes the enjoyment out of it.

How many people know about my collecting... on some level everyone I have worked with for the last decade. The large boxes slung under my arm every so often when I come into the office are hard to miss, let alone me opening said boxes at lunch time to inspect the contents. Most of the people I drank with in the misbegotten days of my Friday's evenings down the pub (we were a fairly tight-nit band at one time). My mother and her husband. My sister, obviously (who no longer has to ask where I am going in the Supermarket when I say "back in a sec" and these days normally comes with me.
But then, I don't make any secret of my interests - and in general no-one who knows is particularly bothered by it in all honesty. (Well, it befuddles my mother. But then she is befuddled by my choice of music, the television I watch, the books I read.... and we have long since reached a friendly detente about the whole thing - she doesn't try to understand and I don't worry too much about educating her.).

Sadly, despite our advances in vegetable pickling, we live in a society that demands conformity to standards set by those that draw importance from unimportant things: Football for boys, marrying footballers for girls.
We should each be proud of our individuality, not scared to show our true colours. I am proud of who I am, and no one has the right to judge who I am or what I choose to do.
There is nothing more distasteful than following the herds into some intellectual abattoir of greyscale mediocrity.

The majority of my friends/family know about my collection, several of them ridicule me good-naturedly right up until they actually see the spare room which is filled with Ikea shelves full of TFs. Then 20 years immediately come off their age and they get stuck in trying to recall the names of the ones they had and loved as a kid. Every single time.
