I imagine many folk with broadband access have downloaded the odd movie/tv show/album/comic/towel from the interwub at some point via...other means...rather than paying for it. Is this piracy? Is it reasonable? Does downloading affect your purchasing decisions?

Well ... it's only piracy if you wear an eyepatch or scream "Yaarrr" lots. But seriously, I don't download stuff unless it's meant to be downloaded (like The Return of the Ghostbusters is ... it's a fan movie ... these people have found a better way to discover poverty than writing mere fan fictions).

I may download the odd TV episode if I won't get to see it for quite some time (if at all) or if it's one I missed. But mainly I download stuff if it's not otherwise available, like say fansubs.
Never downloaded a film and I doubt I ever would. If I want it, I'll buy it. If I want to see it, but not own it, I'll just rent it.
"Free" music downloads mostly consist of tracks bands have made available before they were signed. Although I have grabbed the odd album, if I've heard a support band is supposed to be really good and I'd like a sample.

On the whole I used to only download stuff I intended to buy (Gilmore girls season 7 and this year Heroes and Smallville, I have been planning on getting SV on DVD for a while but thought for a change I wait for the complete series boxset when the show ends in 2009) or if I wanted to see if I liked something, usually music.
Recently I have been downloading stuff I dont plan to buy, Harry Potter audio books I just dont have the 2-300gbp to buy the cds and while the cassettes are much cheaper second hand all I'd do is convert them to mp3 and never touch them again, then they would take up valuable space.
Generally I try to avoid downloading (to keep long term) as the quality is never as good.

I don't download a hellish lot, and more often than not it tends to be stuff that isn't commercially available. I don't download films and dvd rips very often and the few I do is something I was swithering on buying anyway.
I have friends who are not so inclined and download right, left and centre and have availed myself of their facilities. This isn't always a good thing it's how I watched the Catwoman film. Such a fucking horrible experience. That should be the punishment for all piratical types.
On a side note, I do want to go into my local cinema dressed like a pirate at one point and when the anti-piracy ad comes on scream about discrimination and storm out.

I don't download, mainly 'cos we don't have a PC at home at the mo! But I prob wouldn't anyway. Can't be bothered. Some people I know, at work etc, download LOADS AND LOADS, it's scary. Maybe people do it 'cos stuffs too over priced? Are they overpriced? I don't buy too many DVDs etc. We rent if we really wana see/listen to somat. When I do buy it's a case of I like to have the proper cover etc etc. Going out and buying it makes it feel more like an experience, or treat.

I've downloaded stuff that I will buy on DVD later (TV shows). I still always like having the physical catalogue available in the form of official Box sets.
Aside from that, I avoid albums, rips and cams.

Been watching Heroes series 2 -bit hit and miss. It's good to see something that normally wouldn't be seen for months. We only pay ransom tax for the idiot box, so I don't have a problem with that. CD's are dying out, so will DVD. HD is not worth bothering about. Everything is going for download anyway. Only problem is the pitiful speed of downloading available.

CD's are dying out, so will DVD. HD is not worth bothering about. I doubt that very much. People value packaging, and will always enjoy having something professionally produced on their shelf if they rate the contents highly enough, and if it is affordable. Me, I'm still on dial-up and see no incentive to upgrade. I have the PC on for communication and ordering things, and nothing else. I like my books and films to stand in official packaging on my shelves having nothing to do with the Internet. I feel more strongly about properly printed books than CDs/DVDs, mind. So much thought and imagination contained in something that has no requirement for electricity to run through it. But I digress... Martin

Slightly off topic but relevant, Mrs Shockprowl moved away from buying everything we want, esp DVDs, and rent many from the libary. Costs less than a rent shop, and you can keep it for longer. They have serieseses and everything.

I've done that on the odd occasion shockprowl, but I can never get to the library in time. I've already had fines (!) this year for stuff I took on holiday and forgot to renew earlier. I've got so little time I've not been to the library in about 4 months. I have never knowingly downloaded anything I've not paid (dearly) for. In fact the only thing I have downloaded was Vincent Black Lightning 1952 from Napster and I cancelled my subscription so I've not got it any more. Copying other people's CDs...that's another thing entirely.

My theory about piracy is that it has spiralled out of control in recent years due to the high prices the executives charge for the official releases. If they put a more affordable price on them then you would probably see piracy drop off a bit. This is just my opinion and I'm fully aware that it isn't shared by everybody.
As for downloading I download photographic sets from certain sites that, ahem, arn't work safe.

I do download some SF shows that often take years to turn up on TV over here and are hacked to bits or stuffed with ads. I watched Stargate SG-1 on Channel 4 but got so annoyed with the presenters taking the piss and mocking the viewers before each episode that I switched to downloading the show. The presentation of the show actively encouraged me to go elsewhere.
I also use downloading on a 'try before I buy' basis and have picked up DVD's, CD's etc after sampling them in that way.
I watch very little broadcast TV. I last tuned in to a TV programme on my own set last June. If anything airs on BBC2 I do want to watch I have to download it as my BBC2 reception is poor and virtually unwatchable.
