Went to the dentist this morning for the standard 6-monthly check-up. Ever since the time I had tooth ache I always go for my check-ups now.
After I was done, I went off to pay. I was told it was free now. "What?!" I blurted, "It's not usually free!"
"It is now," I was told.
What a fabulous idea! I had no idea dental check-ups were free now. So get get your teeth checked out without worry of cost!

Really? Or is this a sign of your studenthood?

Nowt to do with being a student. The surgery was not aware of my student status as last time I was there I was still in full-time work.

Then it must be a north of the border thing because I just had o pay 15gbp. Then have a huge filling costing another 25gbp. Then I got told it will more than likely need root canal in the future. Andy

The strange thing is that I questioned that it was free (to ensure I did not get a surprise bill later on) but the receptionist went off to double-check it for me and consulted some paperwork which did indeed state dental check-ups were now free.

Well according to the BBC report, the charge was abolished north of the border in April 2006. Which means I was charged the last three times I went before yesterday's check-up when I shouldn't have been. Hmmm.

See if you can claim a refund. The statute of limitations probably doesn't yet apply.

I have to pay £45 because my dentist dropped out of the NHS last year and I can't get onto the register of another one. I get a large cavity in my wallet and an overriding taste bitterness every time I visit the dentist.
