Dark of the Moon Cyberverse Commander Ironhide
Is this the first Movie Ironhide toy I've owned? I know I avoided the Voyagers for the first and second movies.... I tried to get a Hunt for the Decepticons Recon Ironhide (still trying in fact) because he's the mother lode of weapons for the c-clip gimmick.... looks at toy list.... Ah! I think I have a Legends Ironhide which I bought in the Straightaway Shootout box just to get Sparkcrusher, a repaint of the superb and very rare Universe Legends Warpath (Best Legend Ever!). I'm not keen on the design for Movie Ironhide, especially the split slanted chest formed from the front of the vehicle mode but I like that they've used black for the vehicle and robot, a nod to Diaclone #02 Cherry Vanette, 1984 Ironhide's ancestor. Incidentally why hasn't there been a red repaint of a Movie Ironhide yet? We've seen Movie Primes, Jazz, Ratchet and Starscream in their G1 colours but not Ironhide. But I have digressed.....
Cyberverse Ironhide is a black pickup truck. The vehicle has some considerable elevation but there's lots of robot hanging under the vehicle. Like Commanders Prime & Megatron he has a 3mm bar mounted lengthways at his rear plus vertical exhaust pipes that form 3mm bars. I've not got any of the Action Sets yet so I've not been able to try him towing Prime or Megatron's trucks yet but he has enough space at his rear to use either Prime's backpack or Megatron's tanker/weapon on the c-clip.
Ironhide has his own weapons though: a pair of short cannons. One has a spinning Gatling gun barrel on the front, the other has a ball jointed c-clip on it's rear. Each weapon has a 3mm bar handle that can be held by any Cyberverse toy or plugged into Ironhide courtesy of the holes in each door or on the cab roof. The guns combine with the c-clip unit at the back and the Gatling at the front to form one longer weapon that can be pegged in or attached to the c-clip bar at the rear.
Transformation: Pull the rear of the truck back to form the robot's leg folding the top of the rear back to form feet. Rotate each leg at the knee so the fronts of the legs point down. Fold the doors out to the sides, then down, then split in two folding the lower half down to form the arms. Fold the arms out to the sides. Pull the chest plate, which is under the vehicle, down and hold while you fold the front of the vehicle forward to form the robot's body. Fold the robot's head up.
Ironhide's robot mode is all about the shoulders. They're ball jointed but the ball joints face backwards from the body, not out to the sides as is normal, severely limiting the arm's motion. Compounding the problem is the socket on the top of the arm that holds the ball: they're made of putty and as soon as you touch the arms or bend them slightly too far in the wrong direction, which you will do because of the stupid placement of the ball joints, the arms will fall off. There's a bicep joint on the arm which I would happily loose to swing the shoulders further forward. The arms bend, the legs are ball jointed at the hips and knee. The hands are c-clips so he can hold his guns.
But to be honest the whole toy is compromised by the shoulders. Even if the putty socket on the shoulder is a freak to mine, the backwards ball joints severely limit the toy. Together it's fatally compromised. Avoid unless you want to spend £9 on the rather nice combining weapon.
1 per case in the first Cyberverse Commander Wave, Ironhide reappears in some assortments of the second wave. No repaint or Action Set repack has yet been announced.
