Here's the thing dude - for the unitiated (and according to Daniel, Dream's son - ooh geeky reference), the GL ring is a magical wishing ring. So what do we see? Two boxing gloves, a couple of machine guns and a Hot Wheels track.
It's just a bit juvenile! There was no tension, it all seemed pre-planned out (if that makes sense), and there were some aggravating plot holes and Obvious Sequel Scenes that were tacked on.

The GL animated film First Flight is on sale on DVD in the UK at long last. £5.00 in Asda. Andy It wasn't too bad. Inventive action scenes and an interesting villain (Sinestro) just about managed to skate by the non-entity that is Hal Jordan. -Ralph

I didn't care about Ch'p as the film gave me no reason to, but anytime Sinestro was on screen it was solid gold.

Yep, Sinestro is great. He is a suitable nemesis, gets good dialogue and has a VA with decent delivery - all told he comes across really well.

Ch'p is the greatest Green Lantern of all time. Andy Maybe so in other media, but in this cartoon he was just a minor incidental character. -Ralph

I paid $6.75 to see it on opening weekend. The big screen probably helped the experience.

It won't be II, because it isn't a sequel. It's a full hard reboot, ignoring the first ever existing.

Shame, but given how badly they botched the previous GL film it's understandable.
Thoroughly depressed that the rumours do seem to suggest a new Hal Jordan.
Would rather we had John Stewart.

The sad thing is, the first one isn't truly terrible. They just tried to do too much. Introducing the concept, Hammond, Paralax, Sinestro, Sinestro's (meaningless) betrayal, and setting up the Sinestro Corps War and set the stage for the War of Light is too much to reasonably ask of a two hour movie. Your "Botched" is a great descriptor, and much more appropriate for what happened than the labels most people place on it.
If they had just weeded out a few of these and focused much more tightly on the remaining elements, it would have been significantly improved. Being a huge GL fan, I'd never even heard of Hector Hammond before this film. But I think he could have been a much better villain with better focus. The extended version shows the potential, because almost all of the deleted scenes were his, and they were all scenes that gave him depth, and sympathy. He was a major part in the childhood scenes between Hal and Carol, and made his relationship to them make more sense. All that was cut out.
If they had cut Parallax, and focused on Hector, or the buddy cop aspect between Hal and Sinestro... The movie would have been worlds better.
Though my personal preference would have been to follow the Secret Origin storyline, that had Abin Sur die while transporting Atrocitus, and have Atrocitus loose on Earth as the major villain.
Either way, it's not a horrible movie like a lot of people overreact in denouncing it say it is, but it's definately botched.

Oh I agree. It's not dreadful, just far too much of the mythos is thrown in and we are told it's all important. Failing to more follow the effective "show, don't tell approach" it became a bit of a mess.
I always thought the way it should have ended is with Hal learning that in fact their is a corp. He proclaims "I'm Green Lantern" and all of a sudden Sinestro appears and says "Not yet."
Then bring in the mythology in the 2nd film. The audience has too much to take on board and for the folks not up on GL lore it's a bit of an ask.

The audience has too much to take on board and for the folks not up on GL lore it's a bit of an ask. Andy Oh, that would have been FUN! Focus entirely on Hal vs Hector, then ending with that! First movie be a traditional superhero movie. Second movie be a scifi buddy cop, which is totally different than any other comicbook movie in existence. Focus on the relationship between Hal an Sinestro. The third film focus on the fall and betrayal of Sinestro. The key to Sinestro is they need time to make the audience not just like him, but adore him. He is the BEST Green Lantern. We need to see why. We need to love him as a character, because we need to feel pain when he puts on that yellow ring. Even us long term fans who know it's coming need to be silently begging him "Don't do it, don't do it!" This is also why I don't like the animated First Flight movie. They try to do way too much. They presented a trilogy of full length hour and a half movies, in the space of an hour and ten. Amazed the new film has been announce 5 years before it is out! -Ralph This is the strategy both WB and Marvel/Disney are using. Both have movies announced that far out. I know WB has a SHAZAM movie that far out, and I believe Aquaman is around that far out. I think Marvel has Captain Marvel around then, too.

I take great pride in seeing Green Lantern retroactively becoming one of the better DC Superhero movies due to Zack Snyder and co. (Moving my reply to the GL thread so I don't derail SS) I still maintain that where GL went wrong was in trying to condense a trilogy into one movie. There was enough going on to be the subject of three movies. But they wanted to erect the skyscraper without making sure it had any foundation at all. Movie 1- Villain: Hector Hammond. Typical Superhero movie. Introduce Hal and Carol. Let us get familier with the basic concept and world. Movie ends with Sinestro arriving on earth to find out what happened to Abin Sur (like Andu said). We the audience then learns that this so so much more than a just another superhero movie. Movie 2- Villain: Atrocitus. Buddy cop movie set in space. Introduces us to the greatest Lantern, Sinestro. Intruduces us to the Lantern Corp, Kilowog, the Guardians, and the rest. Sinestro takes Jordan under his wing, as they hunt down Sur's killer, Atrocitus. Movie 3- Villain: Parallax. Someone has unleashed Parallax onto the universe. Introduce Star Sapphire. Halfway through, we learn that Sinestro is the one who unleashed it, seeking to control it. This all sets the stage for the future movies such as The Sinestro Corps War, the War of Light, and The Blackest Night. And would also serve as a really strong DCCU foundation. I understand them wanting to get to the War of Light asap, because GL was the most popular comic franchise at that time, because of the multiple corps. But that only worked because it was both new, and had decades of ground work. Also Sinestro turning heel at the end of the first movie is just a really bad call. We need to care about him, first. Long time fans need to secretly hope he doesn't turn heel, we came to care about him so much.
