Good news everyone! Having spotted that the hotel had slashed prices on the remaining rooms (£67.50 for a twin!) I've secured a room for Friday night!

Okay, I have booked myself in for the weekend - being an immense cheapskate means I am at the Etap which is a bizarrely cheap £18 per night. I'll be heading up for the Friday afternoon through to Sunday, Garry Oh, Garry, the tales I've heard about the Etap...

Oh, the Birmingham Etap has a reputation as a home for, shall we say, brief encounters betwixt party boys, party girls, and any combination thereof. I think the reason it's so cheap is because they don't expect their rooms to have a full night's use... Did someone say glorified pub meet? I will be there. Mark, I've got a pint with your name on it. But it'll be warm by AA so I'll drink that and I'll buy you a cold one on the day. Cheers John, I shall look forward to it! Mx

Oh, Garry, the tales I've heard about the Etap... Every reply I could think of writing would have some double-entendre.... Maybe I get a prize if I stay the whole night? Garry

I think thats the same price as the hotel next to ibis on ring road circle 18 cov rd. you have shared bathroom & you collect your towels from reception from ibis next door. I like to have bathroom in the room & towels. I stopped at holly house near Victroia London once £30 a night & bathroom was outside - but you had a fridge in the room. Birmingham etap doesn't look too good from the outside - when you look at the building next to it. Looks like fancy apartments next door.

Pff, all you want from a hotel room at a convention is a bed to sleep in.

I'm off to visit my parents after AA. Question is, should I leave it til Monday to travel, or go back Sunday night. I can't remember, how long does stuff generally take to wind down on Sunday?

Hope not we don't want anything stopping us enjoying the weekend.
Also hope all the guests get here ok - with the overseas guests heading here now. And all the people travelling here to attend the event too.

Well, I'm using National Express to get there, and they've just announced they're not servicing Brum for now - hopefully they'll be running come Friday... I mean, that's a few DAYS away...

Think it will be alright, although I can see there being a lot of bus services being suspended at night over the next week or so.

Who else is staying at the Paragon? I'm going back to the hotel friday after the Target 2006 & saturday script reading - but it'll be about 21:30 & getting dark outside. but its only 3 roads walk so not that much trouble.

The Paragon is about 15 mins walk away through an industrial estate. I would recommend a taxi.

It's not that bad - if they hit anything on that route it would be the market storage area. If you had 7 people stood at the corners you could see each other from the hotel all the way to stood near the convention hotel [being able to see one of the other people]

Pete, having stayed at the Paragon twice the route to the con hotel is through dark streets away from where, say, the Police will be. In light of current circumstances I would strongly suggest you get a taxi at night. Up to you.

It is a bit dark down the bottom. But would expect police around that area seeing you walk passed the market entrance. I saw the police there at that sunday market shutting it off - they must have found some one selling fake DVD's.
edit - the area that looks most dark within the central ring road is the area below the train bridge over on oxford street, with it having more little road & darker than paragon area. At least people homes near the hotel instead of being all warehouses.

Is anyone bring along with them their partners, who are off shopping instead of going to AA? If so & they are just going round shopping & if all the riots stop & Emma decides to come along. She wanted to go round shops instead of coming in AA [to get baby stuff] - but i can get her ticket for the sunday to sit inside. But there is the bar area where any non-attendees can sit? But then she'll have some other people to walk round the shops being safe while I'm listening to the talks. I'm sure many of us have partners who would rather go shopping than get warm stood in the convention.

There's a public bar on the second floor I think, you have to go through it to get to the convention area, she should be able to sit in there

There's toilets downstairs from the bar, down the staircase we pass on the way in.
Perhaps shopping in Brum is not the best plan at the moment?
