Are you coming to AA 2011? If so for which days?
Due to finances I'm going to be a Saturday day tripper.

Six responses and no-one's commented on the title. Standards are slipping.
Anyway, Dad and I will hopefully arrive mid-afternoon on Friday, depending on how well the loading goes; we'll be leaving Sunday evening.

Hmmh. Due to my piss-poor finances at the moment it's looking very likely that I'll be giving this year a miss, which is pretty hard for me as a) it's in my hometown and b) I've been to pretty much every AA (bar possibly one 'cos I was on tour, my memory is a bit hazy) since 2001. However, if anyone's planning a drink in a satellite pub, give me a shout and I'd be delighted to join you all for a beer and catch-up.

As half of the convention is in the hotel bar I'm sure if you swing by, beers will be thrust at you.

As half of the convention is in the hotel bar I'm sure if you swing by, beers will be thrust at you. -Ralph There's an offer I can't resist Not wanting to sound like a party-pooper on this, but it's not really something we can condone from our end. While the hotel's public bar isn't officially part of the convention, there are a number of concerns that immediately spring to mind from our perspective... 1. The hotel is restricted to serving alcohol to residents only after a certain time in that bar BUT they lifted that restriction for convention attendees. Obviously, anyone in that bar during that time who is purchased drinks by convention attendees is potentially breaking the hotel's drinks licence. 2. As it has been said here, Auto Assembly has grown considerably from its early days and has become far more than a room full of dealers and video screenings. It's a guest extravaganza, has workshops, and an immense social aspect to it which takes place all over the hotel - in the function rooms and surrounding areas. Our attendees have paid a lot of money to attend the convention, both in terms of registration fees and in many cases travel / hotel costs, and it's not fair on them for others to come along and enjoy that side of the event without paying. 3. Similarly, virtually all of our guests don't restrict themselves to the function rooms and dedicated convention bar, and are often found wandering around in the public bar. Each year the convention gets more expensive to organise, including our guest costs (this year Auto Assembly is costing in excess of £25,000 to run) and for people to get access to our guests - whether it is for talks, autographs or even just a social capacity - without paying, when others have simply isn't fair. I might not be popular saying this, but we're not asking you to book for a full weekend. A single day pass would get you access to the convention itself on the Saturday, all of the guests, panels etc. for that day and obviously the full social side of the event. The only thing you won't get is the Saturday evening programme but without this sounding harsh, the last thing we want is a backlash against you - or ourselves - if people start coming along to socialise with friends without paying. It will just turn the convention into a glorified pub meet for many whose main interest is the social side and forum meets, with us having to pay the bill for everyone to attend and that, ultimately, would kill off Auto Assembly.

As a guest of the hotel, I have no issues with inviting exactly one mate round for a drink who is not in a financial position to attend an event which may or may not be happening at that hotel. And that's all I'll say about that.
Mark: I am happy to meet you for a pint in the bar.

Okay, I have booked myself in for the weekend - being an immense cheapskate means I am at the Etap which is a bizarrely cheap £18 per night. I'll be heading up for the Friday afternoon through to Sunday,

Did someone say glorified pub meet? I will be there. Mark, I've got a pint with your name on it. But it'll be warm by AA so I'll drink that and I'll buy you a cold one on the day.
