I am looking to get an external harddrive for backing up work and storing/transporting large captured AVIs from the uni editing suite.
Just a quick post asking around if anyone uses an external hd and if so what make/model is best to own.
I currentley have my eye on a rather decent looking 500GB model from dabs.com. I am sure there may be better.

I love them and I hate them in equal measure. Based on personal experience. I suggest you make your own. Buy a laptop internal hardrive and an icybox (?) external case which has a built in usb 2 adaptor. It doesnt need an external power supply and I get the sense that hte laptop hardrives are better suited to being carried around. I've had one for 2 or 3 years without problem.
I've owned two big storage external drives both have crashed losing all the data. Usually its because they wont disconect from the PC for some reason and if you unplug them without "safely removing hardware" or turn the computer off forgetting the drives still plugged in you risk damaging the drive.
For long term storage either add a new hardrive to your existing computer purely for backing up or if you have an old tower put a new big HD in there then its not connected to the net and theres no risk of virus's and the like.
