Oh sweet beloved life bringing internet do not leave me again.
At some pt on Thursday lunch time - while I was busy admiring pictures of the plane on the deck at Heathrow - my PC keeled over and died.
Switching it back on got just further than the windows logon screen before it did it again. It then needed the power disconnected for a few mins before you could try again.
Suspecting it was the power supply I called Dr PC at the church. I wish we could report we prayed for it and it got better but he ended up laying hands on it .... and removing the power supply and replacing it with a new one.
On boot up he found the grapics card was slagged so that's been replaced too.
Once I got it home I discovered the USB card was also dead. I'm suspecting my SCSI card will be likewise.
But the PC works. And he's fixed the DVD drive too.

Glad you're back on the net old chap! Too complicated for their own good these computers. "The more you over-take the plumbing, the easier it is the block up the drain." (Scotty, Star Trek 3). Couldn't live without internet access. Only just surviving myself without one at home- STILL!

Oh sweet beloved life bringing internet do not leave me again. Couldn't live without internet access. But we all grew up quite happily without it as children, didn't we? I get very stressed when my computer plays up, but when I voluntarily take a break from the Internet for a week or two, it's like a breath of fresh air. Martin

I too get stressed when computer problems rear their head. Big fan of the net, I get a lot of my reading, radio and TV through it. To be honest, I don't think I would cry too much if my TV blew up tommorrow. I barely watch TV.
I do spend much less time on-line than I used to though. My usage of it was becoming unhealthy, time-wise. For instance, I used to be on MSN Messenger most nights, now it's once in a blue moon.

Phil, good to have you back amongst us.
Sounds like you might have had a bit of a power surge when the power supply went, so I think you are right to expect the possibility of other components being toasted.
I'm a little like Ralph in that I wouldn't miss my television that much. It would be irritating as it would mean I wouldn't be able to play my R2 and R4 dvd's without a lot of hassle. But if I lost the ability to receive broadcast TV I'm not sure how much I would worry to be honest.
I get most of my news online, and there is rarely much on the terrestrial channels that I want to watch.

Good to have you back Phil.
I have to admit I rely heavily on computers and always get stressed when mine is bustificated.
I'm online a fair bit at times but generally don't mind if I miss a spell or take time away to do other things. It's important to have some balance to these things.

Broadband was off all day yesterday. Just kept getting 'the remote computer did not reply' messages. I was annoyed.

Clearly the work of the Valeyard. Perhaps he felt you were mocking him with your talk of playsets over in the Dr Who toys thread.

The knacker's yard!
Broadband popped off for a few mins earlier. If this is the start of the same kind of problems I had with Orange I am going to go fucking mental.

I keep on having trouble with my BT Yahoo wireless broadband. Every night between 8.30 and 9.00 it completly loses its wireless signal and doesn't switch back on until the following day. It is my assumption that the people at BT finish work around about that time every day and just before they go they reach for a large operate switch and flick it to the 'off' position.

I was having exactly that problem a while ago. Following the typical backs-and-fores with BT, as soon as an engineer came out, he could see what the problem was. Basically, BT had upgraded my connection from 1mbps to 2mbps but the line was only really suited to 1mbps because of the distance from the exchange. As a result, at peak times (from 8.30pm, just like you), other people's stronger connections were kicking out my weaker connection. The engineer put it back to 1mbps and it solved the problem.
Have BT check the speed of the line for you, see if reducing it will help as it did with me.
Of course, when BT had upgraded the line, they said, "look at this great improved service we're giving you."

Hmmm, I wonder if that is why my conection has ben flakey recently as the line was due to be upgraded round about now.
