Efforts to reduce energy use are working out. Six months ago I got a big rebate and now my usage is down enough that my monthly charge has been reduced by £7 a month with some small credit in reserve. This is good news as with energy price rises I expect to have to burn more gas through the winter for heat and my company is on a pay freeze so any extra pennies help. Hurray.

Finished off my long weekend with a visit to the National Museum in Edinburgh. I'd not been since it reopened after a long refit program. They have definitely done a really nice job of bringing it up to a more accessible modern standard which should give it a new lease of life. It was a good way to spend the morning roaming the galleries looking to see how they had refreshed the collections.
The only thing that hasn't really worked out is the cafe provision - it is massively oversubscribed for its size and as a result my plan to have a light lunch in the museum did not really work out. Ah well, never mind - I nipped out to a nearby bakers for lunch before finishing off a bit more of the museum. Came back in time to do a bit of pottering in the kitchen, so that I should have plenty of stuff sorted out for dinners for the next couple of weeks. And I have had confirmation of the booking of tickets for a trip down to my mothers in Surrey next month so that is my "holiday" sorted out this year (hoping to visit the RAF Museum at Hendon whilst I am down there, amongst other things).

Turned up at the Oxfam shop again today on my hands and knees, and handed over a large box of about 80 Panini Marvel reprints before passing out on their floor. The great clearout continues.

Well I have the mother freakin' Space Lurgy, gosh darn it. Shouldn't complain, my first dose in gosh knows how long, over a year? Funny how I come down with 'it' just as the First Born goes back to school (germ swappers!).
Not all doom and snot though... I NOW HAVE THE LOUNGE FURNITURE THAT DEFINES ME AS A PERSON!!!!!!!!!!
Yes it's true! I, er, I mean we, have the bookcases, dresser-thing, and TV stand that define us as people! For our Lounge of Hope and Dreams! How can I describe them, they're like a brushed grey/brown woody look, more grey than brown. Ever so contemporary, don't you know. Got them from a very exclusive retailer, you probably haven't heard of them, they're call Ik-Eah. Ever so posh.
And no, I'm not allowed to display any of my collector's item Transformers on them! Damn it!

Sorry to hear that your having a poor week Ralph.
My day to day was mostly spent with a work experience placement tagging along with me. Surprisingly I still managed to get a decent amount of work done, which I wasn''t expecting.
Still can't work out what has happened to my tape measure though, which is irritating because I need that to measure the floor area of parts of my house so I can start pricing up carpets to replace the badly worn ones which occupy much of my house. I know in my head that I could just buy a new one (thus ensuring I would instantly find the old one by means of the Law of Post Expense Relocation), but it is the principle of the thing dangnabit.

Well, given that it was a metal tape-measure in a metal case, you certainly won't be iron-deficient for a while.

It has been decided that Phil can only negate his new Mike Yates status by watching the Star Wars Holiday Special this weekend. We have learned he has yet to view all of its glory.
It's on youtube, you know.

I tried watching it over a decade ago but the copy I found online at the time took forever to download and seemed postage stamp sized. I didn't get very far but I don't know visual or content quality that put me off.

Some interesting readings from CERN. Might still be an error, but I hope these chaps manage to get another group to replicate their setup as soon as possible and find out whether it's a glitch in the system or if we'll need to take a whole bunch of physics textbooks down the recycling center. Just in case... remember where you were when they broke the light barrier -Nick

My flat is haunted by ghosts with an interest in DIY, according to my letting agency.
I reported a broken light switch to the letting agency yesterday and they said they would have to get permission from the landlord before they do anything. The agency have keys for the flat, but I have previously insisted that they place a note in the file that I don't want anyone to go in without me being present. Their contract also states that they won't enter a rentee's property without permission. I get home last night to discover that the light has been repaired and spent the entire evening checking that nothing had been stolen by the mystery visitor. I rang up earlier to thank them for fixing the light and complain that they had gone against my wishes. However, the woman who handled my calls claims not to know anything about it - she claims that the email & telephone number of the landlord weren't working and, as a result, hadn't contacted anyone to repair the light. She is, apparently, at a loss to explain how anyone could go in and blamed ghosts for the repair.
So, my light switch has been repaired & reattached to the wall by an ethereal entity, or an unknown person with keys to the property has repaired the light and the contact is trying to cover it up for some unknown reason. I really, really need to move somewhere else.

Sadly, that is par for the course with rental agencies. Customer service does not exist.

Not had a problem with my last two flats but the one before that was terrible. People would come and go at will (not even trying to knock on the door first) and I even ended up waking up one morning before 8am to a workman singing away in my kitchen. The garden was also under their duties to maintain which they failed to do and tried to deny. Also increased the rent enough to price me out of it in the end without telling (or passing on any of the increase) to the landlord (who was a good friend of mine). She was quite unamused.

Just in case... remember where you were when they broke the light barrier -Nick Even if it isn't a practical effect in terms of large scale objects. FTL information travel.... that would have game-changing implications in itself. My working week has come to a mixed end. On the one hand I had sufficient flexi-time stored to be able to leave the office at about 4pm this evening. On the downside I have a nasty headache and I feel well and truly zonked. I suspect a relatively quiet weekend beckons. Mind you, whilst looking for the bleed key to my radiators I managed to find the tape measure I have been looking for this week. So I might be spending some time doing measuringy things this weekend. Karl
