In an idle moment I decided to see how well a list of my favourite film from each year in the last two decades, taken from my DVD collection, compares with my favourite twenty films of all time. Unsurprisingly, it turns out that some years had no films made that are now in my top twenty, others had more than one. 'Spirited Away', for example, fails to appear in this list because it got trumped in 2001 by 'The Fellowship of the Ring'.
It appears I don't own any films on DVD from 1998, but I do enjoy watching 'The Mask of Zorro' when it comes on the telly. I do have DVDs from all the other nineteen years, though the ones I own from 2006 and 2007 ('X-Men: The Last Stand' and 'Transformers') are not great films. 'Pan's Labyrinth' (2006) and '3:10 to Yuma' (2007) were better, for example, but I feel no need to own them.
Anyway, here's my list. Films that would probably be in my top twenty of all time anyway have asterisks by them. Recent ones that need to stand the test of time have asterisks and question marks.
EDIT: Now expanded it to go back 35 years rather than 20.
1977 - Star Wars
1978 - Revenge of the Pink Panther
1979 - Moonraker
1980 - The Blues Brothers*
