Cross posted from my Facebook page.
So, Royal Mail's big price increases....
Royal Mail's biggest competitor is email, as people are using that instead of sending letters. So Royal Mail raises the cost of a stamp, which is going to cause more people to send emails because letters are now so expensive. Likewise sending e-cards or Facebook messages instead of paper cards; using online banking, online transactions and direct debits instead of sending cheques.
Small businesses make up a large part of Royal Mail's custom. So Royal Mail raises the cost of sending parcels, so that small businesses use couriers instead. Or they are forced out of business. Or they stay in business but have fewer customers because they had to put their prices up so they send fewer parcels. Small businesses stop using the sub post offices that rely on their trade so the sub post offices close. So Royal Mail gets less income. Sub post offices close so people can't pay their bills in person so they turn to direct debits and online banking; they would post their payments but it's too expensive because the price of a stamp has gone up.
Increased postage costs mean that it's no longer worthwhile for individuals to sell their stuff on eBay, Amazon Marketplace etc and go back to selling on car boot sales and classifieds instead. So fewer people pay Royal Mail to carry their parcels for them.
I've also posted this on my eBay shop this evening; I will also have to revise my Amazon and website charges.
Royal Mail has announced its annual postage price increases which will come into force at the end of April. This year's revisions include a change in pricing structure and significant increases in prices. Unfortunately, we will be unable to hold our Postage and Packaging charges at their current levels in the light of this announcement and will have to increase them accordingly in late April.
We recognise that everyone is under pressure in the current economic climate and we are sorry that we have to pass the cost on to you, our valued customers. However, Royal Mail's changes mean that all international postage costs will rise by around 50% and domestic increases will be as much as 65%, depending on the item, so we hope you will understand that it is simply not possible for us to absorb the increased cost.
If you are considering buying any products from Science Fiction Collectables, then we strongly recommend that you do not hesitate; please buy ahead of the postage increase to save yourself money.
On a positive note, the change in Royal Mail's pricing structure will mean that UK customers will be able to benefit from greater combined postage savings for most multiple-product transactions.
Thank you for reading and for your understanding in this matter.
