My set of "Bulldozer" and "Excavator" came in today.
For simplicity, I'll call them Bonecrusher and Scavanger.
And first, I want to get this out of the way, since there's never been any decent compairson photos out there. These are indeed deluxe equivalents.
I personally always thought that they were, but there'd never been photographic evedence, really.
Both of them stand the same height as Gen Drift, and are a head taller than Prime Ratchet and Arcee.
So, should look nice on a G2 Classics shelf, where the majority of the toys are deluxes.
Vehicle modes-
They're nice, and solid. They hold together very tightly, and very well. Great detailing in them as well.
I honestly don't have much to say about normal realistic cars. There's less I can think of to say about realistic construction vehicles. (Give me an unusual vehicle, or an animal and I'll write an essay)
Transformations-
Complex without being complicated, if that makes any sense.
The transformation schemes are fairly intuitive, and longtime fans will not need instructional help to get to robot mode. (Arm modes, maybe)
There's also some clever devices we've not quite seen before too (Largely with the upper leg. Can't think offhand of any TF that has any scheme simular to how the treads form the upper legs). Also, some inventive ways to fold the arms up in vehicle mode, as well, which really makes them compact in those forms.
Both Bonecrusher and Scavanger partially share moldss, it's worth pointing out. Both their treads/legs are identical, as well as their combination ports.
Note: I haven't attempted arm modes yet. I think I'm going to save that until I have all six, and ready to form Devestator.
Robot modes:-
I am like the only person on earth who's not impressed by TFClub's Hercules.
It's massive size is impressive, but that's about it. While I've never seen one in person, looking at them online I find them all to be very ugly, bland, and lifeless toys. They just scream generic, and completely devoid of any personality.
Maketoy's Giant team I always found much more interesting. As individual toys, they all looked pretty strong, and they all seemed to have tons of personality.
I'm not dissapointed. Individually, they aren't exact duplicates of their official G1 designs (In the way that Classics Starscream is, per say). But they still carry many design details, as well as striking off in their own directions.
These very much feel like Classics Updates, in the vein of Universe Hound.
Scavanger: The biggest complaint people have, is that his shovel is mounted on his forearm. I personally love this relocation. This to me gives it a lot more personality, than if it hung off his back.
Overall sculpting is sharp and striking. His headsculpt is really nice, I feel. Not as nice as say, Munitioner or Explorer, but lots better than City Commander.
Special note, they even sculpted in G1 Scavanger's combination link. Cute!
Bonecrusher: WARNING!!! Mine came missasembled! The piece the head is attached to was put on backwards. If it happens to you, the fix is easy, but involved. There are four screws that disassemble his waist. You have to take his torso apart and flip it.
Like his box buddy, Bonecrusher has some great detailing. And his headsculpt is better than Scavanger's.
Posability for both is fantastic. Joints are all really tight, but not overly tight.
Now, Giant is really Maketoy's first go at making full transformers, and this is an ambitious way to start. There are definatly things about these toys that mark Maketoys as inexperienced rookies.
The toys are not without their problems. There are some things that could have been done differently, or better.
And they should have had tiny wheels embedded in the treads, like hasbro does with their treaded vehicles.
But all in all, these are really impressive for a brand new company! I greatly look foreward to completing this thing!
