They have been with us since 1984. The Starscream toy repainted twice for the first year giving us the Strike Plane jets. Then repaint 3 more times for 3 more jets.
But this is just looking at the characters from G1. If anyone thinks that a future line character is better [with the same name - ie Armada, Energon, Cybertron, IDW, Movie, Animated, Prime, Games] ?
I'm voting Starscream - because he does stand out, whether you look at G1 comics or cartoon.

Skywarp has always been my favourite. I think I had his toy first as a kid, the black n' purple colour scheme always stood out to me (cuz I was always a wee emo goth type, probably), and according to the wiki he pushes people down stairs. Whch is always funny.
I have many Skywarps, and only a couple of Starscreams, and less Thundercrackers.

Thundercracker; he gets interesting characterisation on occasion, I like the blue and red scheme. Even though I'm not keen on the Classics Starscream mould, I like it as Generations Thundercracker. Also, AMTC!
(Alternity TC is pretty cool too)

Thrust: he was the first of them that I owned and it would be years before I owned another (Actionmaster Thundercracker); he was also the founding member of my Decepticon forces. In fact, he had to hold off Optimus Prime and, shortly after, Grimlock all by himself until the Stunticons arrived.

Thrust was used a lot in the cartoon releases in the UK - but we didn't have that many. From the first time I saw the toys in shops in 1986 it was Starscream, Thrust, Dirge - Tracks, Hoist, Grapple. I can't remember seeing Skywarp - Gainsborough toymaster had Megatron in. No where had Optimus until the gold release.
