Personally I viewed Dredd as a medium to far future based story, this film really came across as a near-future scenario and it was one of the reasons it just didn't sit well with me.
All in all I thought the film brought Dredd nearer to a crowded genre and suffered for it.
For what its worth I actually kinda enjoyed the camp Stallone flick, although I can clearly see why many fans totally despise it (taking off the helmet, chewing up the scenery acting, bumbling comedy bits).
Marc.

This film was really good, the slow-mo effects and 3D weren't totally convincing but were an interesting dynamic. I really liked the no character development, no backstory, no compromising aspect to the lead character. I haven't seen the original and know nothing about it beyond he takes off his helmet so nothing to compare it to.

Dredd is out in the US! Going to see it tomorrow.
There is one cinema in Ames, Iowa. It has 12 screens, with 4 showings of Dredd 3D a day... and one in 2D. I take it that's the one to go for?

I went to see it in 2d, 3d just gives me a headache (glasses on top of glasses is also uncomfortable)

Saw it in 3D. Doesn't really add anything to the film I felt, but other than normal 3D moments of disorientation doesn't detract from it either.

Dredd was good. About as horrific as I was expecting, so it didn't shock as much as it could have. Twas good. Karl Urban was excellent- in fact the whole cast was excellent and the finale was a proper nail-biter.
Nice wee (furiously spoiler-laden) review here:
Don't worry about the start- it's a fakeout and only lasts a minute or so.

Alas, it has performed very poorly at theatrical release, amassing only $21,897,391 worldwide as it slips out of theatres suggesting it hasn't really found its audience. It has pulled $6,770,418 from UK takings which is still quite poor for UK box office. I would imagine, however, that this is the type of film which will likely have a very healthy life on home video formats and will likely turn a profit in the long run if perhaps not enough to greenlight a sequel. Plenty of films don't find their audience until home video or TV after the initial release. But does that really matter? Just enjoy what you have, I say. I'll never understand the way the internet seems to scream that something is only validated if it gets a sequel. I didn't see the film myself so have no comments at all about the quality of it. I just have a long running fascination with how movies perform! www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=dredd.htm-Ralph

It's a shame, but the lack of 2D availability has killed it IMHO.

A rather generic trailer didn't help to make it stand out from the crowd. Sure, I know the comics but most of the audience didn't. Take our comic heads off and it just looks like A.N.Other low-budget action thriller in Eastern Europe.
Now, many many trailers mis-sell films and I have been amazed sometimes to see fresh interesting films that had dull generic trailers.

I feel I owe it to John Wagner's chickens to pick up a copy and give Dredd a wee boost.

I have now seen it, thanks to Andu. Can't see what the fuss is about. Urban is excellent but I found the film exceedingly boring and lost interest very quickly. Leaden direction and no sense of tension or excitement. Very monotonous. Going from the impressive futuristic wide city shots at the start straight into the street level shots of modern cars and folk in modern clothing pulled me out of the movie staight away too. Tedious slow motion stuff didn't help either.
Honestly couldn't see what folk have been raving about. Can't fault Urban though. He was spot-on in the lead role.

True. Shockingly, I thought the Stallone film was significantly better. It's actually gone up in my estimation now! So some good has been done, in a strange way.
Much of the new film has gone from my mind already. Just dull.

Shockingly, I thought the Stallone film was significantly better. I like it (though it's not in 'Demolition Man's league). Joseph Dredd: "I noo you'd say dat." (takes off helmet) Martin

Give me that over the lazy subplot of sexual threats against Anderson in the new film which was distasteful. Sorry, I've had enough of that in comics (you never see male characters threatened that way), we don't need to port that to comic films too.
The more I think about 'Dredd' the more annoyed I get with how crap it was. How this has become an internet favourite boggles my mind completely.

I didn't have a problem with that, given the situation, and I don't see it as a comic film issue in this instance, but more to do with the criminal aspect of Dredd. Though I agree, in comics it is an overdone and distasteful practice.

I find it distasteful and gratutious in any medium. Some writers need to grow the fuck up.

Oh you won't find me disagreeing with you. But that is kind of the point of it, and it sadly is something that does happen in real life in criminal environments, but it's sadly become the go to option for making people dislike a character. Cheap Heat to use a wrestling term.

Good news. Seems bluray sales are somewhat astronomical.
Bad news. Lionsgate are trying to claim its the 3dness of it thats responible.
If there was a 2D release and a separate 3D release no one would have bought the 3D version. Idiots. Dertmined to ruin the film at every chance.

At this point I can't decide if someone involved was taking money to push the 3D format or if after they monumental screw up of the cinema release they are just desperate to prove they were right to bet on 3D.
