Hi. I’m a big fan of the G1 Cartoon series and have been enjoying TF: Prime and recently have been getting back into comic books after a 18 or so year absence. I’ve always been intrigued by the TF mythology when they hinted at it in the G1 Cartoon and I think TF Prime is doing a cool job with it. When I realized that there were new comics being made re-imagining the series and the characters free from a lot of previous constraints I was curious to check them out. But it’s been very confusing. I was posting on a different forum recently and wanted to see if opinions were similar here.
From what I can tell, IDW released a bunch of mini-series that took place throughout different periods of their imagined TF timeline that fits into one big storyline. However, from what I understand most of these seem to be held in very low regards by the fans. This is a shame, because as I began to investigate the concept and approach seemed really interesting to me or at least enough to make me curious. (I am not interested in throwing my money away though). What is it that most fans dislike about these? When I check amazon, most reviews seem be mostly positive.
As I understand, that has all been tied up and two new series were launched that take place in the current time of the TF timeline:
-More Than Meets The Eye
-Robots In Disguise
These seem to be enjoyed much more than the previous IDW by fans, is that correct? If so, what (roughly) are each of these about?
Also, I read they are relaunching Marvel’s series with Regeneration 1. This starts soon?
Any help and information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!

Regen One has already started.
MTMTE is about Rodimus leading a team of Autobots into space to look for the legendary Knights of Cybertron, and have adventures along the way
RID is about the rest of the Transformers left behind on a rebooted Cybertron tryingto live in peace, but things don't always go to plan (especially with the trigger-happy Prowl running around!)

The IDW universe was pretty decent, it was more the reboots All Hail Megatron and the ongoing that seemed to irk a lot of readers. Myself included.
The main IDW storyline kicked off by Simon Furman is in the first 4 IDW HC collections. A wee bit pricey but a lot of reading.
MTME - is the fun, romp book. A lot of black comedy though but the tone is deft enough that it doesn't come across as unbearably dark.
RID - is the building of the new world order on Cybertron, politics, subterfuge and action all alongside each other.
Both books are distinct in tone and well worth checking out.
Regeneration 1 as Matthew has said has kicked off already and is damned good.

A goo starting point is the recently released trade of More Than Meets The Eye. It's very new reader friendly. It's also available digitally.
Robots in Disguise is also quite easy to catch up on.

Andy I'd love to pick up the IDW HC Volumes if they weren't so insanely priced (I know it's because some of them are out of print) . I don't care if they are HC, either i'd settle for a cheaper soft cover version. From what I gathered what most people don't like about the earlier IDW books are inconsistencies and weak story lines. For me, I don't really have any preconceived notions, so i'd be totally willing to just jump and absorb it all.

The inconsistencies creep in more towards the later spotlights and AHM.
The Furmanation verse as it was dubbed was remarkably consistent. the biggest gripe was it took a wee bit to get going. The 1st mini was paced too slow, and the pov human character was a wretched, unlikeable person. However, once it got past that it hit it's stride.

So with that said, which comics/story lines make up the Furmanation so to speak?

Personally, I enjoy and would recommend both More Than Meets the Eye and Robots In Disguise. They are both only about six issues in and don't rely too much on prior history, so there's not too much to catch up with. Also, they each take a very different look at the Transformers mythology.
Regeneration One has only just started - the first issue (#81) was released last week and can still be easily obtained. There was #80.5 before that, which may be tricky to get hold of but it's not essential reading. The creators are keen that the series is accessible to new readers as well as those who have read the Marvel comics. The latter period of the Marvel series, which Regeneration One continues, is regarded by many as the greatest period in Transformers comics; the new series is the same writer and artists.
As for older IDW comics, you might like to try the Spotlight series. These were individual stories each focusing on a particular character. Some stories were outside the main storyline, some tying directly in. There were various creative teams, so they should give you a flavour of the writers and artists whose work you might like to explore further.

The best way to get all the stories would be in tpb - unless you visit a comic mart & lucky to pick up all the single issues for 50p each. Best to check Amazon where you can pick them up cheap. [covering Marvel,DW,IDW]
