My niece is turning 13 next month and I want to buy her a Supergirl graphic novel.
Can anyone recommend good titles that would be accessible to a new reader and preferably are considered something of a classic tale for the character?
When I was at Bristol Expo the other month, I read the blurb on one that seemed to be mainly about Kara-El finding her identity, which sounded like a good choice for a teenager, but I didn't buy it because I didn't know if there'd be something better available. Unfortunately, I didn't note the title. Anyone know what that one might be?
Thank you.

Can't think of any. Whenever I've looked at Supergirl comics in the kast few years they just seem to be tits and ass nonsense. There was a decent Peter David run, but I have no idea if it is traded.

The new 52 Supergirl is pretty OK. Mahmud Asrar's art is good and never really goes down the T&A route. I dropped it because the story is well-trodden superheroics, but to someone new to that stuff it should be fairly entertaining.

The name of the trade you're thinking of is literally "Identity", but I can't recommend it. It was a mish mash of bad continuity and unfathomably random behaviour... I doubt anyone could find anything to relate to there. Of the Supergirl material I've read in recent years, then the Batman/Superman trade sinply called "Supergirl" which reintroduced her to the DCU is a personal fave (although I suspect this may fall under the T'n'A definition Ralph mentioned, as she does debut nude), and the New 52 version was also quite fun. Don't think the trade is out yet though.

Thanks. If it's T&A I think I'll look for something else instead; that's not a good role model for a 13 year old girl. Yes, I think it was Identity; I found it on Amazon and it had mixed reviews.
I think I'll buy her a jewellery box instead. Then I can be consistent when my other nieces turn 13 as they wouldn't appreciate a graphic novel.

Yes, DC seems to have an unhealthy fascination with trying to make comics about strong female characters to appeal to more than just men; and employing artists obsessed with giant boobs and tiny skirts and big asses. Because that's what girls like to read, you see.

Actually a lot of the early post-Crisis Supergirl stuff was totally not T&A, she had a few mini-series, but I've never seen them in trades. Supergirl probably didn't get anything approaching T&A until post 2000.
I'd also say John Byrnes Wonder Woman wasn't very T&A either.

Yeah that woud be the Peter David era Supergirl. Not much in trades, only two I think and both long oop.
A sad indictment that you can't find a Supergirl trade suitable for a young girl.
Madness.

The first Supergirl mini I have is the Roger Stern one, basically resolves some plot points from the Superman books at the time, Peter Davids was more a spin off that took the character elsewhere.

Oh I'd forgotten about the Stern mini, that came out not long after the Death/Return of Superman didn't it?

Yea - it had Supergirl as the Lex Luthor II girlfriend post Return of Superman, ended with her discovering his betrayal and kaboom.
I was a regular reader of all the Superman titles at that point, the Peter David run was such a different direction I never 100% bought into it. Superboy was probably my favourite comic during the Karl Kesel run.
