Seeing as how we have the radio thread I thought I'd start up a podcast thread. Share with us any podcasts that tickle your fancy. My current favourite is The Bugle, a comedy podcast with John Oliver and Andy Zaltzman looking at current affairs. If you don't use itunes it can be found here. www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/tools_and_services/podcasts/Andy

What is a podcast?
I mean, I've heard the word a lot, but never bothered to find out what it meant as I assumed it was something for people with iPods.
Whatever they are. Never bothered look into that either. Assume they are like Walkmen only with loads of memory. I once owned a Walkman but never used it, so I never bothered find out what iPods were.

You don't need an iPod. I don't have one. And podcasts existed before iPods. They are merely radio shows on the internet, often made by folk in their bedrooms about whatever subject matter interests them. You can download them onto an MP3 player, which is what I do to reduce my time hooked up to the computer!

Ah, I see, thanks.
I wonder why video clips on the Internet are just called video clips, and photos are called photos, while audio clips are called podcasts and text articles are called blogs.
I suppose I have listened to podcasts, since I have listened to BBC radio programmes on the Internet when I've missed them on the radio.
I don't know the difference between an iPod and an MP3 player either. I'm a bit of a hopeless case. But I have written computer programs in several languages in my time, honest!

I have never used an iPod. I recall when they came out an dit was reported that when the battery went dead you couldn't have it replaced so had to buy a new one at £200 odd quid. I thought: 'sod that' and bought a £30 MP3 player which I've been using for 2 and a half years and it still works great. An MP3 player is just a wee device you can listen to audio files, ie podcasts, radio shows, music, etc on without having to cart around a CD player and lots of CD's. I regularly listen to: HOUSE TO ASTONISH (great comics podcast) housetoastonish.podomatic.com/MOONBASE 2 (Transformers): moonbase2.libsyn.com/index.php?post_category=generalWTF@TFW (Transformers): www.tfw2005.com/ (link is posted there when a show goes up, usually a Tuesday or Wednesday) WAR ROCKET AJAZ (comics, has interesting guests): warrocketajax.com/I did listen to the TFORMERS podcast, though that recently passed beyond the veil. -Ralph

I think an Ipod does all sorts of stuff in addition to that though.

Ahem.
The Irish-based comic podcast The Comic Cast (thecomiccast.com) is good. Expecially tomorrow evening's one, where I talk about robots and try not to swear too much.

I'm guessing what you say was a problem with the very early ipods because when the batteries go dead you just plug the ipod into the mains on into the USB socket of you computer and charge it back up. And yes, an Ipod does do quite a few other things beside play music although I don't use it for anything other than that purpose. It has on it a clock, a calendar, space to save your contacts on (phone numbers etc.), you can also store text files on it and even play basic games such as the legend that is Snake! The more recent ipods though can also store videos so, with a decent ipod and decent Youtube video ripper on your computer we can watch Stardub on the move! ;D

I think the difference between an iPod and a generic mp3 player is that an iPod is only from Apple, if you buy a music player from anywhere else it's just an mp3 player. Like how you can have a vacuum cleaner, but it's only a Hoover if it actually is a Hoover.

Also checking out the Autobot City podcast (Transformers) and Back to the 80's (focus on toylines from the 80's), both of which can be found here: autobotcity.myfastforum.org/index.phpFast becoming addicted to podcasts. They're great to listen to when going for a walk or late at night when I can't sleep. -Ralph

So far I only listen to Gospel stuff, such as Andrew Womack ministries.
Been meaning to try out some of the Transformers/fandom related ones that are doing the rounds to broaden the library.

I don't have the time to listen to podcasts that I used to have so I find I now have a constant pit of months old podcasts in an ever-growing digital pile, which is nice. Always got something to listen to when on a move. I do make a point of catching each episodes of 'Back to the 80's when it comes out though.

I've had a bad cold/flu which left me with little energy and some eye problems, so have been listening to a lot of podcasts over the past few days. I've become addicted to several pop culture podcasts on popular myths & urban legends: Futility ClosetMysterious UniverseThinking Sideways

I've recently started listening to Unjustly Maligned. www.theincomparable.com/ump/Basically the host has a person on each week talking about something from Pop Culture that has been unfairly maligned, we've had the Doctor Who McGann movie, each of the Star Wars prequels, Big Trouble in Little China, some music albums. Current podcasts I'd recommend The Evolution of Horror - a look at the horror film over the years, currently working through the history of the Slasher film. Cult of Geshcast - friend of this parish Gav Spence and Phil look at the best of cults as they make their own. Hypnogoria - Jim Moon looks at horror, fantasy and other cult genre material. Last Podcast on the Left - a rather ribald and tongue in cheek look at cults, conspiracies and serial killers. Chart Music - each episode takes a look at an individual episode of Top of the Pops.
