It's not out for a week but the internet means copies are available now. Much, much better as an album to listen to than St . Anger. Now I like a few of the tracks of Stanger but as an album it was a mess. Death Magnetic is a return to somewhere between Master of Puppets and ...And Justice For All. It's been a bit of a wait, but worth it.

I've just read in the Guardian Music & Film supplement that St Anger was a commercial and critical flop, is that true?

It sold well enough but is probably the least successful of their albums and yeah it was a critical flop. That being said I think they can take that kind of hit.

I've yarrrrred Death Magnetic, and I have to say, all the signs are it's living up to the hype. The single is the weakest track on there - the opening trio of songs make for 20 minutes of gloriously furious thrashing. It's very, very good indeed.

It's an album where I found the tracks didn't leap out at me, but bits did and the more I listened to it, the more i enjoyed it. The single is definitely the weakest track. The album feels like it could have been somewhere between Master and Justice.

My favourite tracks tend to end up being like the third or fourth single released from an album. Based on that trend and this song, I'm not as excited as I should like but will drop notes happily.
