www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-20127135Well Google's Nexus tablet will soon have a 10 inch model with better screen resolution than the iPad. Windows Surface soon to debut. Interesting times ahead. Andy

Indeed. I am happy enough for now with my Ipad 2 which was purchased when tablet computer=Ipad. It's nice and whizzy but the resolution isn't good enough to read print books off it.
The market has really opened up now, however. Whenever I come round to 'upgrading' I will probably not go for another Ipad: Apple's price-points are insane and I deeply dislike Itunes. I only have this one due to an unexpected tax rebate!

I'm holding out for the Surface pro, as a developer I'm either going for that or an alternate Intel based device I can do a little development on.
Mind you I'm also going to get a Windows 8 phone as soon as its out (running Windows 8 now).
Working everyday with Java (what Google built Android on) - its lost any sense of fun for me and I'll never like Apple so figured I'm all in....
The Surface RT looks nice, but as a Dev I don't want just the front end...

How are you finding windows 8?

If you don't have a touch screen then there isn't much reason to use Windows 8, I think its an operating system folk are best holding on until they upgrade to something that'll get use of it or just let it go. The desktop is basically same as 7, the front end and associated apps are effectively going to tie the tablet style windows closer to desktop and phone.
Main reason I'm such an early adopter is if you want to develop for Windows 8 you need to use windows 8, so here I am.

I should add that I know enough shortcuts and stuff that the changes in 8 don't bother me at all, but I'm probably what is considered a power user.

Was very curious, not for myself as I can't see me getting anything new for a wee while yet having shelled out on the iMac last year but when my dad wants a new pc for himself I dare say I will be called upon for assistance. What's it like resource wise, does it have a light footprint or are the bells and whistles a strain?

I've been looking into tablets myself recently. At one stage it would have been automatic that I would go for an iPad, but I am finding myself considering the possibility of going for an Android machine.

Windows 8 is resource wise pretty much the same as 7 - the whole RT ethos is designed to run on tablets so that has a lighter footprint, the full flavour version of windows is pretty much as 7. Had no performance problems even though my PC original came with Vista, so its a smidgen old and I'm using it as a Dev box with no issues.
Just been installing Java and adobe reader for ebanking. adobe now sneakily install chrome AND google toolbar without even asking. I just tried Chrome and frankly it was mildly amusing - will be uninstalling both right now.....

Just make sure it's not one designed by Dr Soong! I was leaning more towards the work of Eldon Tyrell's company. They have a fairly robust warranty from what I hear. Although their devotion to the idea of planned obselesence and regular upgrade cycles may become trying.... Karl

(Or as it should probably be called an iPod-Maxi!) Oops that was meant to be Nexus 10, the 10 inch one. But Apple have already announced the price points for the mini and the 32g one is £349 for wifi and £449 for wifi and 3g. Andy

Ah yes, I did think 330 was a bit much for the Nexus7.
Sony Xperia tablet was stopped in production due to a design fault ¬_¬
