Radio4:
New series of JAM this week. PLUS POINT: Rick Wakeman MINUS POINT: Shappi Khorsandi who annoys me intensely on JAM.
Only another couple of weeks of the News Quiz to go, hopefully it'll be the Now Show afterwards

Did they keep the internal monologue/narration? Yep, there's quite a bit of that stuff in it. Phil - Just a Minute is what gives me joy. And I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue. I gave up listening to The Now Show long ago, as I find it too cynical and negative. It just makes me want to yell at them, "Well you go out and sort the world's problems then if you're so much better and cleverer!" Martin

Paul's comment at the end of the JAM round on "My Greatest Impression": "I didn't come all the way from Great Portland Street....." superb. A good few years since those words were last uttered on JAM.
Clue is great. So pleased the week 2 show that closed the last series *finally* had all of Uxbridge English Dictionary, Pick Up Song, Sound Charades & Mornington Crescent on. They've missed at least one of those, sometimes two, out of most week 2 shows for the last few years.

Have enjoyed this last series of Just A Minute very much, and not just because they got Fi Glover on (formerly of the world's greatest Radio Station GLR) and she prooved to be rather good.
I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue starts again on Monday with Brigstocke making his debut on the panel. He's been in Camelot so I think we think he can sing.....

Last night's featured Paul Merton, Julian Clary, Richard Herring and Jenny Eclair.
Well worth a catch up if you didn't hear it.
Favourite line up? Something consisting of the following... Paul Merton, Julian Clary, Graham Norton, Sue Perkins, Marcus Brigstocke, Gyles Brandreth, Liza Tarbuck or Tony Hawks.

"I didn't come all the way here from Great Portland Street ......"
My two favourite shows are both on CD so you can listen to them.
<consults archive on PC>
Feb 10th 1996 Clement Freud, Peter Jones, Paul Merton & Kit Hesketh Harvey (on JAM 2)
Just for the final round where Nicholas announces that anyone can win bar Peter.... And Paul & Co procede to show him that he was a bit wrong.
Jan 5th 2003 Clement Freud, Paul Merton Ross Noble and Linda Smith (on JAM anniversary edition)
both Paul and Ross go wandering off on one .....
Beyond that.... Sue Perkins, Julian Clary & Graham Norton all make a good show

It may be sacrilege to consider, but who could take over as host if Nicolas Parsons ever retired?
I'd like it to be a regular. Although most like Merton, Norton, Clarey, Hawks should stay as panelists... Sue Perkins could work? Giles Brandreth even better though.

Good question that. The clue team always said they wouldn't do it without Humph but jack dee fits the mould well. I've no idea who could do JAM.
Actually, did I hear Sandi Toksvig say last week that this is her last News Quiz series? Do we know who is going to replace her?

Not yet. Never liked her as the News Quiz chair, much preferred Simon Hoggart.

Yes, I did like him. I like Sandi though. I keep the News Quiz for the Monday morning commute, always brightens it up.

I like Sandi as the News Quiz chair. Shame she is leaving but I hope they don't offer it to Jeremy Hardy. Not because I think he isn't funny, but he's better value as a contributor.

After the 'try out' series in the spring I'm pleased to find Sue Perkins is the new chair. Nobody can replace Nicholas, obviously, but of the ten they had I thought she was one of the best alongside Paul Merton, but really with JAM you want Paul as a contestant.

I don't really have any strong feelings about it either way. The only replacement chair of a Radio 4 panel show that I think comes close to (or even surpasses) the legend that came before them is Jack Dee on I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue, who is absolutely perfect.

I just felt some of the chairs in the last series were wrong for the feel of the show. Thinking about this earlier gave me pause for thought. The three big Radio 4 comedy regulars (Clue, JAM and The News Quiz) have all now moved into a 'next generation' situation with changes in regular panelists and hosts, resulting in a different feel to the programmes. What I see as proper versions of those shows are gone. But then what I see as proper was the last generation's new fangled back in the late 80s when I started listening.
I mean, Simon Hoggart is the News Quiz host to me, although I came to love Sandi too, but to someone else it would be Barry Took. Clue has slowly lost its original team over the last ten years (bar Willie Rushton obviously) and today I listened to the first episode of the most recent series with none of them in. It was still funny (very funny actually!) but it's almost like Clue isn't Clue any more. I really thought they'd stop after Humph died, but Jack Dee really does suit that role. But even then, was he chosen because he mimics Humph's style?
Not sure really what I'm saying here, only that it feels odd to realise that me grumbling quietly to myself that these shows will never be like the good old days again would seem odd to someone 20 years older than me who went through the same feelings years ago when they last changed.
