First of all, let me say Red Nose Day is great - it entertains and it raises a ton of cash for good causes.
But charity telethons always perplex me somewhat. Everyone knows there are people in need out there, so why do they hold off giving their money until a celebrity shaves their head? I mean, there are so many people giving so much money today that would not give it if there wasn't a comedy charity thing on the telly and lots of people doing silly things to get their attention. Or are they giving money in one night that they would have given anyway but at other times?
Just something to ponder. I shall go back to enjoying the silliness on the telly, but I won't be picking up the phone to make a donation. If any of the causes championed strike a chord with me I might amend my monthly charity direct debits. (Steady regular donations are more helpful than one-offs, folks.)
Welcome alternative perspectives.
Edit: And another thing - charity raffles/lotteries. WHY? Why do some of the charities I give regular donations to think I'll give them more money if they offer me a random chance to have a chunk of their money given back to me? If I wanted to take their money I'd just stop giving in the first place. BUT! If they make some people give more money than they would otherwise, I suppose charity raffles and lotteries must also be a good thing.
