TOP 5 TRANSFORMERS TOYS
This was very tough. There's a few cheats which I offer no appology for.
Bubbles under:
Energon Towline- An excellent fun Transformers toy that should have been released as Ratchet and Ironhide. It would have been their perfect updates. Towline though is a still a great fun action figure in his own right.
Combiner Wars Prowl- This mold works so well as my favorite character. The head/face sculpt is excellent. I don't miss the carbonnetchest at all. He's my Classics Prowl these days.
Generations Ultra Magnus- Seems to feature often in my play with the Small Child. A 'go-to' Autobot hero. Really nice update of a great character, even if I don't like the whole Minibus Ampule aspect.
Combiner Wars Devastator- At last, a huge bulking toy of Devastator! The plastic's cheap, and he falls over a lot, but he looks so magnificent amoung smaller Transformers toys. Devastator is just so iconic.
Combiner Wars Menasor- The 'Anti-Autobots' have always been a favorite of mine, Motor Master in particular being a great character and menace to Optimus Prime. Updated in excellent fassion. I love playing with them.
G1 Metroplex- My first large Transformers base as a child. Packed with features. Utterly amazing when I was a wee boy.
G1 Terrorcons- I'm a '84/'85er, as you know. I didn't like it when the alt modes got all 'futuristic' and 'Robots in Disguise' became less of a thing. But, there's something about a team of 'Nightmere Monsters' that was just so much fun, and fitting, for the Decepticons. Hun-Garr, Blot and Cutthroat were some of the last Transformers I ever got, back in the day. It was only years later as an adult that I finally completed the set. With the modern update just around the corner, these fun and imaginative toys still delight.
G1 Dinobots- Transforming dinosaurs!!! Brilliant! Grimlock is the best.
G1 Shockwave- I've never owned one. I did own a grey 'Shackwave' for a while. Such a wonderful alien looking design, a large figure, and great gun mode. A brilliant toy, and a legendary character.
G1 Megatron- They turned a handgun into a fantastic looking robot worthy of leading the baddies! Brilliant engineering. Great looking toy.
G1 Optimus Prime- Doesn't get more iconic does it? A superb toy with such huge play-value.
G1 Astrotrain- Back then, to have two 'Robots in Disguise' vehicle modes in one Transformers toy was remarkable. I loved this figure as a child. Blitzwing also was superb, but Astrotrain was the one I had as a boy.
G1 Jazz- An example of 'Robots in Disguise' quintessential Autobot Car goodness.
G1 Wheeljack- The familiar 'Autobot Car' done differently producing a really superb looking robot with a great character.
G1 Ratchet & Ironhide- A great 'alieny' design giving us toys of wonderful play-value.
G1 Strike Plans- Iconic, nostalgic, great characters, great threat-factor to our heroes, fantastic toys.
Owl Prowl- The perfect beast form of my favorite character. Robot mode is a bit goofy, but SPACE-OWL mode is such fun.
Magnaboss- Grrrrr! An superb Beast Wars combiner! With a Prowl!
Magmatron- Great creature mode and amazing looking combined robot mode. Brilliant design.
G1 The Five- There's something about Beachcomber, Seaspray, Cosmos, Powerglide and Warpath, as a Mini-Autobot team that tickles my nostalgia-organ. Great figures. Really marvelous little toys. Seaspray being my favorite of the group, with the imaginative Cosmos a close second.
TOP FIVE:
5. ARMADA UNICRON- I know we're now desperate for a Titan Class update of this character, but back when I bought him (from Argos where he was listed as 'Transformers Armada: Unicorn'), this figure was astonishing. At last, a decent sized figure of the ultimate evil force in the Transformers universe. A character that blew us away in the Movie. At the time, a time when I was just getting back into collecting Transformers toys, this figure was amazing, and still has a ton of play-value. I still remember one of his leg missiles whizzing a inch over my First Born's head when she was a baby!
4. G1 PROWL- I don't want to be too predictable, but this figure so captivated me as a child I just couldn't leave him out, even though play-wise he's been overtaken by MP and other representations. This mold is such a nostalgic quintessential 'Autobot' mold, that captures the 'Robots in Disguise' element of Transformers perfectly. I was desperate to own this figure, and character, as a child. And when I finally got him, I was so happy. I still have my original, and the Classics Heroes one that replaced that one, both are now in pieces due to over-play. The reissue stands proudly on my shelf by my side of the bed, on perminent display.
3. MP 10 OPTIMUS PRIME- G1 Optimus Prime was a magnificent leader figure, with a great base. A truely epic toy back then. Take that toy, and upgrade it to modern Masterpiece standards, and you get a figure of enormous iconic beauty. Great trailer-base, a Matrix, fold rifle. He's so awesome.
2. G1 SOUNDWAVE & SPY-CASSETTES- No other toy from when I was a child captivated me like Soundwave and his Spy-cassettes. They're 'Robots in Disguise' perfection. It was only as an adult that I finally got hold of a Soundwave. He didn't disappoint. The Spy-cassettes come hand-in-hand with Soundwave, with Ravage in particular being a great design. Wonderful childhood nostalgia surrounds this figure. The MP figure is a superb update, but you can never surpass the wonderful Transformers alien magic of this great toy.
1. MASTERPIECE PROWL- A beautiful update of my favorite character, before the line got 'Too Sunbow' (and too expensive). He's perfect. Actually perfect. I don't think there's a better G1 toy update out there, except for MP10. I love him. I own three. One on display, one to play with, and one mint in box to keep forever. Huh, maybe I should have a forth as back-up...?

50 millimetres?! That's a big weapon mount. fifty mike-mike...? Nah - that's just the classic Browning "Ma Deuce". If you want to go really large surely you'd be talking a good 220 - 230mm pipe. :-) Karl

Week 250: Top 5 Transformers ToysWhat are your Top 5 Transformers Toys? Good grief this is tricky. It's going to be so dependent on mood and will probably change by the year (if not by the day), but I'm going to tackle it by going for the top 5 with the most meaning for me (in the mood I'm in at the moment of typing): 5. MP Bluestreak - like some kind of childhood dream come true 4. Armada Bonecrusher - though I dipped back in with RID, Armada reeled me in fully. Bonecrusher has such an amazing transformation, and I think was the point where I started appreciating the engineering. 3. RID X-Brawn - where it began as an adult collector! Wasn't intended that way, it was just a fun, silly thing to go to a toy shop and buy a Transformer on my 22nd birthday with some money I'd been sent by my Grandma but look where it led... 2. Energon Ghost Star scream - I thought this was the most beautiful thing at the time, and now own all but one variation of the mould that I'm aware of. 1. G1 Gears - where it all began. He isn't as objectively good as Double Dealer who I gave the Top 5 G1 spot to, but you can't beat the first one. At the moment my top bubbling-under entry is TR Topspin, which sounds like I have a ridiculously short memory, but he is so good. Owl Prowl rides high as well.
