There really is just nothing of that kind in there. It's just an action/adventure comic with evil aliens hiding. That's it.

On issue #28 of Rom now. Very conscious of the similarities with and presumed influences on Budiansky's Transformers. I think the two series have different strengths and weaknesses.
Rom struck a really good balance between Rom universe stories and wider Marvel universe stories. I wish Transformers had been able to have X-Men instead of Neo-Knights, and Galactus instead of Unicron. Rom also benefits from not appearing to be so driven by constant turnover of toy lines - though I am frustrated when other Spaceknights more entertaining and interesting than Rom himself repeatedly got introduced and then bumped off leaving the relatively dull Rom in place. It's a bit like a Transformers comic too much about Optimus Prime. I enjoyed the 'Saga of the Spaceknights' stories.
The plot whereby Rom is misunderstood and gets attacked by those who should be his allies, though not a bad one, was repeated rather too often for my patience. I'd say TFs had more plot variety and more humour, taking itself quite a bit less seriously.
I liked the second story in Rom #25 which was not written by Bill Mantlo, in which Rom encountered another Dire Wraith married to a human woman, who forsook his evil ways. It was more satisfying than the earlier Mantlo issue that began that way, because the Wraith survived this time, and Rom had to decide what to do with him. (And to my relief decided correctly, thereby somewhat relieving my distaste for the comic's seeming to be about good and evil races rather than good and evil factions or individuals.)

Right I need to give Martin some more Rom to read. 30-65 this time, which makes a natural break in the story. As part of that he needs some annuals and here's where I think they fit in: Rom Annual 1 between 36 & 37 Rom Annual 2 between 46 & 47 Rom Annual 3 between 59 & 60 Rom Annual 4 between 72 & 73 (next & final batch)

I gave up on IDW ROM. I was enjoying it but the high cost of single issues of US comics is just silly now especially as the strip amount has also decreased to 20 pages from 22. Very poor value for money. About a pound more than an issue of 2000AD but with a lot less reading in it. I may come back to ROM in trade format.

The general IDW Revolution trade is now out. As it features ROM in it is this the first ever trade paperback in print to feature him?

My reading of Rom has rapidly accelerated - 55 down, 10 to go! It's a slow-burning saga and I was being somewhat ground down by the repetitive formula in places, but it has really picked up now that Earth's governments have learned the truth and Rom fights side by side with SHIELD. This is what I'd have loved to see happen in Transformers after the Autobots came to an understanding with G.I. Joe, Triple-I and the wrestling-viewing public, but Budiansky was on the wane and Furman had other ideas. Plus... I now learn it had already been done a few years earlier in the pages of Rom!
Anyone else think the Torpedo ranks high in the table of most ineffective superheroes ever?

In the G.I. Joe comic, the writer Larry Hama went about a hundred issues without killing any characters who had toys, and then suddenly killed off loads of them over a relatively short period, as if suddenly they had ceased to be bulletproof. A bit like the TF animated movie, actually.
Rom circa issue #50 felt a bit like that, except it felt less like a sudden change in the laws of physics than it did when it happened in G.I. Joe and TF:TM, in that the series had been darker throughout, and it actually served a plot point in terms of the development of the Spaceknight characters. Those long-standing characters who died weren't simply forgotten two pages later.

I think they came back to you with Hulk: Pardoned and Regression, at our last pizza fest. I handed them over to be taken home in the car by Liz when she dropped you and Jonathan off. Martin

FOUND! In the library, still in the bag they were returned in.
I must have taken them in there to get the trades out then got no further with it. I saw the bag Friday and wondered what was in it.

There are rumours of some deal having been done possibly in relation to the Dire Wraiths lawsuit.
