I took a break from Daredevil: Root of Evil and read the second volume of Ostrander's Suicide Squad; excellent series, glad volume 3 is already on my read pile! Luke McDonnell's art is tremendous, I'm always surprised by how he never seems to be considered an a-list talent of that period. There's also some early Erik Larsen and Rob Liefeld art in there.
Then I went back into the DD epic, and it does get better after the awful Elektra mini. The Chichester "Alan Smithee" issues are quite well done, though the central plot makes no sense at all if you think about it for more than a second _and_ centres on a massive coincidence. Keith Pollard on art, and it may be the best Pollard art I've seen; I don't usually care for his work at all.
Then there's a stand-alone Warren Ellis issue which is laying the groundwork for going back to a more classic status quo, and a Dematteis issue with Ron Wagner on art which is part 2 of the Over the Edge crossover with Fury and the Punisher, but is actually pretty good. Looking forwards to the next volume in a couple of months with the Dematteis and Kesel runs.

Finally there is an Aliens trade paperback of the first three minis without the stupid renaming of Newt, Ripley and Hicks.
Of course I did my duty. Along with the collection of Evan Dorkin's excellent Milk and Cheese, Superman by Geoff Johns and John Romita Jr.

Just picked up the collection of Mister Miracle by Tom King and Mitch Gerads.
Damn that was a good series. From what I've read of Tom King's work - Omega Men, The Vision he is the master of the 12 issue maxi-series.
Not read his Batman work so can't comment on that.

Picked up a stack of heavily discounted DC collections the other day, and have just read Starlin and Mignola's Cosmic Odyssey for the first time. I'd never even heard of it until now!
The story and writing aren't bad, though he definitely does his best work at Marvel, but Mignola's art is absolutely wonderful, and well served by an oversized deluxe HC. I doubt I'll read it again, but will be keeping it around to pick up and gawp at from time to time. Nice to discover things like this.

It's cracking stuff, and yes I would agree Jim's best work was with Marvel.
Speaking of Jim - I picked up the latest HC Infinity OGN with art by Alan Davis and Mark Farmer. Lovely stuff and does read very much like Jim is writing his farewell to Marvel.

Now have just finished the John Byrne's Wonder Woman vol. 1 HC. I... enjoyed this a lot? It does not have a good rep, but as I've never been all that invested in Wonder Woman and have not read the Perez run prior to this I figured I could handle Byrne doing his usual "must turn everything upside down!" thing, and it's really fine. A lot of fun, even.
Based on the credits he does literally everything but the colours, and I like his looser, sketchier style of this period. There are some lovely splash pages.
It isn't a very plot-heavy book, the writing seems more intended to drive visual spectacle, and with what he's doing there I am totally fine with that (in fact, I just ordered vol. 2 fro m Books etc.)

In a move that will please many, I've ended up costing myself money When I wrote the list of UXM issues traded last week I did some checking and discovered that, in addition to the upcoming Eve for Extinction hardcover, there had been a softcover version. What's worse is I discovered that I had owned it at some point, and another X-Men book I now couldn't find: En route: CW Frontline 1 & 2, X-Men Death of the Dream, XM Eve of Destruction & XM Poptopia I'm assuming Death of the Dream is Dream's End. New copies of Eve of Destruction, Dream's End & Powerless ordered. I can only assume I got shot of them because I had the issues in Paninivision. |

Four trades delivered today Fantastic Four Spider-Man Classic is a collection of their Team Ups including a few MTU issues I didn't have in trades, including the Mr Fantastic story I read in my first few Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends. It's an old volume I grabbed cheap off ebay but since I have the Iron Man MTU volume, and will probably buy the Black Widow, I wanted this as well. New X-Men Companion Selection of X-Men Unlimited from around the time of Morrison's New X-Men. A quick glance makes me think I might not have made a great choice here. Havok & Wolverine: Meltdown Bought the issues when they came out, not read since, not owned for donkeys years. Might prove interesting. X-Men Epic Collection 4: It's Always Darkest Before DawnBeen waiting for this, it's the "what the X-Men did between their original series ending and New X-Men" Some was in Essential Classic X-Men 4, others were in other Essential volumes so the majority of this volume I've not read colour copies of and a few issues I've not read at all. Just finished Deadshot: Beginnings. ugh. I've been really enjoying going through Ostrander's Suicide Squad and expected this to be a nice supplement, but it is relentlessly grim and Mcdonnell isn't bringing his a-game (which is surprising for what was a prestige format mini). It's going on the to-sell pile.
The only saving grace is it also reprints an Englehart / Rogers Batman story, but there's going to be a proper collection of their run in a few months (at last!).
