And all of a sudden I won't be buying Masterpiece Ultra Magnus. This fantatical psycho just looks so damned good.

I was going to jokingly suggest Shattered Glass Star Saber earlier, but I am not surprised to discover that their really is an evil coloured version.

I encountered Star Saber the swashbuckling hero in the Victory cartoon before I ever saw mention of the psychotic despot version on TMUK. I don't like him being portrayed as a villain, but he's so heavy with "crusading knight" iconography that I can easily see him as a warrior-evangelist paladin type. I hope I'll be able to get stickers for his jet mode with "Primus Loves You" written on them in English and Cybertronian, like the noses of Saudi Airlines jets.I'll save the "Primus Hates You" stickers for the inevitable Dark Saber repaint -Nick EDIT: apropos of nothing, I'm sure Karl and a couple of others spotted the significance of Star Saber's sword placement in MTMTE versus Victory and the original toy. In Victory, Star Saber was the Autobot commander, essentially reported to no-one and often went off as a lone wolf to mess up Deathsaurus' shit, and he wore his sword on his back in the manner of a samurai with no master. In MTMTE, however, he wears his sword on his hip when he's not jamming it through the torsos of innocent fan-favourites. This was the style associated with samurais who were under contract, and MTMTE Star Saber works for Tyrest as his new crackpot enforcer. Subtle.

I never really saw the TMUK version of Star Saber as psychotic, now... sociopathic is a diagnosis I could get behind. :-)
I do like your characterisation of Victory Star Saber as the Knightly Exemplar - it fits quite well with his portrayal in the cartoon where he seemed to be as much travelling magistrate bringing justice to the bandit Destron's as anything else. He certainly fits well with the post-Malory Aurthiania and with the legends of Roland and the like (There really should be a myth about what happened to Star Saber's sword when he passed from function and became one with the Matrix, like with Excaliber and Durandal).
To go back on topic a bit, the Masterpiece toy is looking decent as far as it goes, but we've yet to see whether he can separate from the V-Star, or what he looks like in his fighter mode(s) so I am reserving judgement on him until we see a bit more.

IIRC Star Saber's TMUK personality being radically different from the usual portrayal was going somewhere..... his Brainmaster wasn't his original Brainmaster
..... but I may be misremebering things.

I have very little knowledge of Victory or Star Saber, so this isn't doing much to me. But it does look like a decent figure.

..... but I may be misremebering things. Interesting! I have no memory of that direction but it would fit. IDW Ultra Magnus.. so unoriginal. My impression of TMUK Saber was this guy has spent so long ruling New Cybertron and its associated worlds and is so into a historical/traditional malarky with an over blown sense of 'honour' that with the re-emergence of the original Cybertron on the galactic scene and the fall of Maximo/The Hub that Star Saber 'nobly' steps up to the plate to take control and develops this (dangerous) obsession with the homeworld and forcing it to fit in with his rose tinted version of what it should be. I always wondered what happened to the rest of his slice of the Empire while this obsession took over...

Oh, and the toy looks good so far! A rare possible buy by me if the alternate mode holds up.

TMUK Star Saber was the spark brother of Optimus, if you all cast your minds back to Globequake and the like. For those not part of the gang back then, fret not as these tales exist in the TMUK Yahoo group and I dare say they will find their way online again at some point. I'll let you know when. The TMUK yahoo group is groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/tmuk/info - I'm a mod so to join just sign up and I can approve you. His Brainmaster was the same right at the start, but during the Shokaract era things got odd as it wasn't the real Star Saber in his shell. As I recall Graham was telling a tale and part way through Miles Reid jumped in with a fic that he had to work around. Andy

I knew I'd got the idea in my head from somewhere, that must be where it was from. I have memories of the idea being chucked into a discussion at some point and it fitting what needed doing.

Am I being crazy to think that this might be compatible with Victory Leo?
Original Star Saber is right in the Masterpiece size bracket and it only involves a torso that accommodates the backpack and the right connections on his feet. Plus they did backwards compatibility with Soundwave already.

I'm glad that someone else noticed that. What *is* going on with that Scorponok there? Probably just a non-transforming PVC figure or something. But still...
And yeah, Star Saber's starting to look very nice. I like that we have the smaller jet, but it remains to be seen: Will we get the Brainmaster? I don't know if that'd be a make-or-break issue for me - it's already one up on Ultra Magnus by having a smaller robot combine with the... er... trailer. If they can get the Brainmaster to work (and I see no reason why they couldn't), this'll be pretty great.

BZ is some kind of giant official 3p convention exclusive garage kit thing. I want to say its Fort Max sized, but I could be very wrong about that.

In amongst the Japanese text I can see the letters "54cm", so I'm guessing not. Well, not quite. But getting there. Thanks for clearing that up. :-)

Oh yes, a movie character that never got released in the US because it was more important to keep piling those Bumblebees onto shelves.

But it's not Wheeljack, it's Que! I think it was meant to be Wheeljack originally (and indeed the TFWiki page states that the character has both names), but my guess is that Michael Bay changed it, because he'd never heard of a "Wheeljack", and knowing that there were only four or five original G1 characters, he decided that there was room to create his own. (This is all speculation. And lies. But any chance... It's Monday morning.)

Mmm. Bottom.
Anyway, before this goes completely off-track... Star Saber's still looking pretty nice. But still no sign of the smaller Brainmaster unit. Come on Takara, don't disappoint!

Yup. Other than size, I haven't seen much more to this figure than the excellent Robot Masters gives us! Hoping the brainmaster feature will resolve!
