I might pick that up, but the Guardians stuff pre-Valentino that I have read didn't wow me too much. The Gerber run is odd stuff in a typically Gerber way, but always at least interesting and has some fine Milgrom art. The only thing I remember pre-Gerber is that there is some nice Gene Colan art in their debut. -Jim

I have to agree that what I can recall seeing of pre-Valentino Guardians was somewhat lacklustre. They were one of those teams with a good idea that the stories didn't live up to. I did read all of the Valentino run back in the day though and thoroughly enjoyed it. I'd not mind seeing it traded but I too expect we will see random one-shots for Rocket Racoon and the like rather than any lean towards the back catalogue - the Valentino Guardians is pretty much entirely a different animal from the version that the film looks to be taking as a a basis anyway.

Went to the National Collector's Marketplace for the first time in a while today; didn't manage to find a single thing on my wants list but grabbed a few random bargains.
Amethyst: Princess of Gemworld #1 - 4 from 1987 for £1. I had never even heard of her until a week or so ago, but the beautiful art by Esteban Maroto (?) on the cover caught my eye and it's written by Keith Giffen so shouldn't be a total loss.
Also picked up 23 comics from a place selling them off at 10p each, randomly assorted in boxes. Got Shadowhawk #0 - 3 (never read it, but I like Valentino and at 40p you can't complain), some Marvel Comics Presents issues around #100 with Sam Kieth on Wolverine, a few issues of Avengers West Coast around the #60 mark, and some Silver Sable, Force Works and Quasar. 90% of their stock must have been early 90s.

Amethyst recently came back in a new title, though the House To Astonish review told me that it featured that old DC stand-by of attempted rape so I will never read it.

Now for the record, I think the original Comic Code was a transparent attempt to stitch up E.C. which took on a hideous life of its own and never did a single good thing for comics. On the other hand I sometimes wish there was something that could be done to get DC Comics to realise why somethings should be off the table as plot elements in mainstream superhero comics. Karl

Google House to Astonish podcast and listen to the most recent episode.
DC are a reprehensible company. The sooner they go out of business the better.

I finally got round to reading all of Batman: Year One on the train today. Er, it's not all that hot really. Maybe you had to be there at the time.

I still enjoy it, the art is beautiful and it's great to see a Batman who isn't the Batman always wins type.
Selina as a dominatrix/prosititute I never thought worked, although Mindy Newell expanded on it in a Catwoman mini-series that made it work a bit more for me.

Oh don't start me on the Selina thing. That was horrible. Also, Gotham was a such a shit hole and full of such horrible people I didn't give a toss about anyone. I also found the handwriting style Bruce uses very hard to read at times.

The only things I remember about Year One are loving the art and the scene where he narrowly escapes the police by summoning bats (that was Year One, wasn't it?).
DKR sticks in the mind much more clearly.

I thought the art was very bland. Nowt wrong with the storytelling, just very boring to look at.

Picked up the DC Comics movie adaptations of Batman and Batman Returns following a twitter exchange with Mr Bodsworth about how Michael Keaton is top dog as cinema Batman and how he would be the right age to film The Dark Knight Returns.
The first adaptation is bloody gorgeous - Jerry Ordway on art and Steve Oliff on colour art. Well worth checking out. The Returns adapation I previously owned and is pretty, but not quite as pretty as Batman.

Apparently the month I was born Batman was facing off against The Shadow in Batman 253, and in Thor 217 Thor was battling against his father, Odin....

A random issue of X-Men Classic popped through the door today. As Phil will ask - Issue 81 - Joe Madureira (pre-manga/anime overload - where he was tops) cover. I fondly remember this book and Marvel Tales. Those reprint books had some of the best cover art on them. Either big ticket established artists or hot up and comers. Hell Marvel Tales got Moebius to do a cover. I do miss good reprint comics on the stands. Andy
