Phil's package of emergency Mantlo Hulk issues have arrived, temporarily dissuading me from the path of crap back issues.

I now have the first four issues of John Byrne's Spider-Man: Chapter One.
I don't think it's anywhere near as terrible as the internet has told me. Though given the first two issues of his Amazing Spider-Man run it feels like the last hurrah of the good John Byrne story and art.

The Goodwin/Byrne/Janson Wolverine run showed up on CSBG's A Year of Cool Comics - Day 162It's not my fave Wolverine story by any means. And I don't like the art - think the Byrne stuff was ruined by Janson's work as it looks completely different from all other Byrne at the time So I said so..... You'll need to read on a bit to see who shows up in the thread.

Have you got the actual official Manimal Annual ? Procured today for the Turnbull from the Oxfam bookshop in Morningside. In other news, the Bog Paper issues have been recycled. Usually I would never dispose of Marvel UK comics but a rare exception had to be made, for the good of humanity. -Ralph

Phil has just completed his run of Avengers v1 stories - from the earliest stuff in Essentials, via UK Marvel Superheroes, US originals and a couple of colour trades.
Also now complete: My DeMattis/Zeck Cap run!
And I also see that Essential Defenders 5 which completes my set of Defenders stories: I have Essentials 1-4 and have the floppies from the end of this volume.

Phil's been reading Defenders issues from the end of the last Essential onwards to 152. Bar a few selet issues it isn't that good really I'm sad to say.
Back to trying to read those Iron Man issues to the end of Armour Wars

Sadly the Defenders was one of those titles that just kept going when it should have been canned but a sense of inertia kept it going.

It just wouldn't die and the revivals since haven't helped. Some books just have a natural lifespan.

Oh yes Gerber Defenders is good stuff. The rest...less so.
Finally read the Manimal annual, proper good annual stuff and two strip stories drawn by John Higgins. Some Green Lantern mosaic issues acquired partly because I wanted them, and also reference material for scotcon.

There are a couple of trades of the start of the Giffen/DeMattis Justice League run that have been rereleased in recent years. Well worth a look if you like your superheroes with a bit of a light touch.
