The latest round of Windows Updates is causing my computer trouble (Win Vista)
There's been an update to install everytime I've logged off recently. it says installing update for a while without giving any indication of progress and then turns pc off. No hint of trying to finish installing an update when then PC restarts.
Looking in the Windows Update history there's a long line of failed updates stretching back to 15/08 when the current round of updates were rolled out.
The repeatedly failing updates are
Updates for Windows Vista:
KB2863058 KB2868623 KB2862966 KB2861855 KB2859537 KB2849470
KB2844287 security update for the .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2 on Windows Vista Service Pack 2 and Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2: July 9, 2013 KB2862772 Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer
IIRC we had a pc lockup and had to force a restart at some point on Thursday which is the likely cause of the problems.
So any ideas how to fix the errors and get the updates going again?

No idea I am afraid Phil.
Having gone Mac I am so far removed from Windows these days.
If you can system restore pre those updates and your Thursday restart and then try from there that might sort it out.

I've had that sort of thing happen before. I fixed it by going into Windows Update (through Control Panel, System and Security), seeing those updates listed as ready to install, and telling it not to accept those particular updates, i.e. skip them. The PC never again tried to install those updates and started shutting down normally again.

Oh FFS!
Investigating the windows update problem revealed all sorts of other s*** wrong with the machine.... At which point I said f*** it and did a factory restore.
That's the point my wireless network adaptor died.

Windows Updates always fill me with horror as I wonder if the computer will still work properly afterwards. Such a lottery.

*shudders* Windows updates, they are the stuff of terror. I still have scars from where I nearly bricked a laptop through a misjudged SP2 install. (Dear Microsoft, if SP1 is going to be required before installing SP2 to prevent something breaking, then make sure the installer checks for this first, and also that you have an aggregate SP1+2 release available in the wild. Fortunately I am a packrat, and had the last SP1 disc distro available for once I had unborked the laptop. <insert Cyberspace Deck slinger witicism of choice here>)

Sp 2 on now. Need new USB wifi adaptor....... Or 20m length of ethernet

Much happier post factory restore and new internet adapter ta. wish I'd done it a few years back as it seems to have cured a lot of problems I was attributing to old age.
There were frequent Firefox lockups and office crashing when I copied to the clipboard that had just started to annoy me.

I'm getting windows update errors - that have 23 updates that aren't updating. But I'm not going to bother with reinstalling everything on my laptop because it is nearly going out. Problem with power unit or motherboard. Takes 30 mins to get started because turn it on & flicks off. Doesn't like using the battery. But i've already spotted a new laptop for £230 that I'll hopefully pick up in 4 weeks.
I have been getting that wireless adpator drive not found - but just restart the machine then they are back.

Almost certainly all failing because of one that's failed before them. Track your update history back find out which one failed first and install that by itself. If it fails check the MS Knowledge Base article relating to the update and see what that says.

just quick question if anyone know the answer (I did check on Windows help first). When in safe mode - how to get a laptop to use USb devices? I can use my mouse but not 3usb for internet or usb memory stick - does not detect them.

If it's safe mode it won't connect to the internet at all. So even if detected the USB it wouldn't work. Pretty sure safe mode will not detect any external storage devices.
