Who Army Builds?
And what do you Army Build?
Do you like the idea of Army Building?
How many figures make an army?
What would you Army Build if you had the chance/spondoollies?

I love Army Building. I freakin' love it.
Currently I Army Build the following.
Star Wars Stromtroopers. I currently have 50, soon to be 75. Gotta stop then, 'cos 75 Stormtroopers is just insane. Absolutely insane. But seeing them on parade... words fail me... it's magnificent.
Star Wars Episode 3 Cone Troopers. I used to have more, but I sold many off to fund other endeavors (including Transformers Masterpieces, and Stormtroopers!). I have 40 all white Clone Troopers.
25th GI Joe Cobra. I have about 40 Cobra Troopers. 4 Cobra Officers. 5 H.I.S.S. Drivers. 12 Cobra Air Troopers. 5 Tele-vipers. 5 Crimson Guard. 12 Eels. 4 Lampreys. And 6 Vipers (Vipers are not standard infantry in my world, Cobra Troopers are the standard infantry. Vipers are Infantry Commandos...). I also have 4 H.I.S.S Tanks, 2 Super H.I.S.S. Tanks (the ones with the awesome triple cannons), 6 Ferrits, 2 Hydrofoils (one incomplete still), about 5 Hydro-sleds, 2 Trouble-bubbles, and 3 F.A.N.G.s. A Cobra invasion force, baby.
Marvel Universe Multiple-man. I believe I have at least 20. He's in his 'Ultimate' style costume, so I have them as a Magneto-controlled army (similar to Ultimatum). They're fun.
Marvel Universe Skrulls. Only have 8. Want more. Really want more. But too expensive. I like Skrulls.

Oh, and I have other Star Wars Imperial forces, including 8 TIE fighter pilots, 8 Death Star/Fleet Troopers, various officers.

What would I Army Build? Well, Red Shadows for one. But only modern 25th style figures. I love a Red Shadow Army. Coupla Mutons in there.
Also, Daleks. I'm feeling a strong urge to collect Daleks. But in the 3.75 inch scale, as are all my armies.
Possibly, although this would have to be after I win the Lottery, some Star Wars Imperial Hard Ware. Half a dozen AT-ATs etc. Ground forces.
GI Joe (Action Force to me) wise... My H.I.S.S. Tanks are all in red, I'd have preferred blue... but that's not a big deal. A Terror-Dome.... for my Cobra Army to live in. Oooohhhh

Oh! That poses another Army Building question! Army building vehicles! Ships, tanks.... of all scales.
AT-ATs and H.I.S.S. Tanks is what I'd Vehicle Army Build.
I'm realising just how close I am to divorce right now.....

I don't really go in for Army Building - although I do have a gaggle of Joe Movie Vipers, but that is only six regular Vipers/MARS Troopers, and a Para-Viper, Ice Viper and a couple of Aero-viper's.
I tend towards putting together small task forces rather than armies - hence my Joe Team Alpha is currently Heavy Duty, Scarlett and Snake Eyes, and Team Beta currently stands at Duke, Ripcord, Renegades Snake Eyes and Renegades Scarlett (the latter two actually being proteges of their movie versions who have yet to get code names), and Team Gamma is shorthanded, being Flash, Cover Girl and Agent Helix ( and will be joined by Boltaction once she is done).
Other than that the only thing I tend to have in large multiples are CB Daleks - because I have a Dalek Factory, and it needs lots of Daleks rolling of the conveyer belt to make that worthwhile - and Macross Variable fighters - of which I currently have a mix of types totaling eleven airframes and I've always told myself that I will stop at fifteen (being five type-mixed three-ship flights). We shall see how that resolution holds up over years to come.

As to what I would have in quantity if money and space were infinite?
Enough modern Joes to do all the customs I currently have ideas for - so that would be about four teams of four, and a load of Vipers to face off against them.
A three ship of VF-22's painted in black with dark grey trim, a three-ship of the Yamato VF-19A, a three ship of the VF-17, a pair of VE-1 Elint Seekers. One of all four types of VF-22 - with Super-, Tornada, and Armoured packs as applicable. The Yamato Macross and Macross Quarter as the worlds most oversized desk decorations as well. And a couple of the drone Legioss from the end of Mospeada:Genesis Climber. (Oh, and four battalions of Battletech miniatures painted by a really good contract painter - my 7th Volunteers unit and an OpFor unit)
That is what comes immediately to mind in terms of "pie in the sky dream" material off the top of my head. I'll stop their before my delusions make the world implode. :-)

Oh and I don't consider my Prowl collection Army Building, that's more completist obsessive compulsive character collecting. Different thing altogether.

Nice collections Karlos. Where do small task forces stop, and army building begin?
I suppose, even though I have only 8 Skrulls, I have the desire to collect more of them. And more and more and MORE! Is the difference then, that you're happy with your teams, were-as I have the desire to keep building my numbers up?

I tend to think of armies as being very large - my real-world reading slips in here, when you can be looking at a full real-world regiments being composed of a thousand people easily and regiments/Battalion combat teams being the building blocks from which real-world armies are formed... It tends to distort my perceptions of the term army compared to the way it is used in toy collecting.
I tend towards collecting small teams when it comes to Joes because that is the way I tend to think of them - given the similarity between them and what gets called Delta and the whole "Best of the Best" schtick. Action Force is slightly different in my head - I always wanted a gaggle of the Generic Z-Force trooper because I thought of them as a straight up infantry force, but SAS Force I felt should come in fives and sixes because they are the Special Forces.
Mind you, I know of one guy in the Macross fan community who probably could meet my definition of being able to assemble a wing or two of Variable Fighters - seeing as he was buying his 1/48th scale Valks in multiples of five and ten - at a hundred quid a fighter back in those days I assume his banking needs were handled by the same sort of folk who do the account-handling for the Wayne Foundation or Hydra! Photographs of his collection is storage used to threaten to make peoples head explode from sheer shock.
(I don't think that actually answered your question, but my brain is fried and I have had a half-glass of wine...)

Question.
At what point do you consider it goes from multiples, to troops? I feel the minimum is three. Absolute minimum. But i only really start feeling like its more than multiples at five.

Yes at least five I feel.
Unicron's Cult sounds like an excellent idea!
I can't think of any TFs I'd Army Build. Or indeed many TFs that could be Army Builders. Except Sharkticons.

I don't think I've ever bought multiples of the same figure. I have nearly every version of the Classics Starscream/Ramjet mould though, which is close enough for me. Just need Skywarp (still cursing the day I ignored dozens of the 2-packs at £15 back in the day) and Acid Storm. Even then I don't have any intention of owning translucent variants or anything- the only characters in the lineup I have more than one of are Thundercracker and Ramjet due to their respectively mental Action Master and G2 colours.
I do have three sets of the original Insecticons- my ones from back in the day, the book-style reissues and the eHobby ones in Diaclone colours.

.....Just need Skywarp (still cursing the day I ignored dozens of the 2-packs at £15 back in the day)...... -Nick I spent 40 pounds on a Skywarp/Ultra Magnus set as soon as they came out on-line... Then they were everywhere... For less than half what I spent! Then I passed up chance after chance if buying a couple of extra sets to then sell on at a profit (to fund my own buying). My small local Woolworths had a dozen of them shelf warming for weeks or months!!! Some times you get the bear, and some times the bear gets you.

I did entertain the idea of army-building Transmetal Prowl as they were available absurdly cheaply, brand new, for a while about 6 years ago (warehouse find?), but in the end I have two black and one white and that'll do. I bought two of the 30th anniversary GI Joe Techno-vipers last year, and had some plans to get more but money beat me. Ditto with Jungle BAT and Steel Brigade, each of which I have exactly two of. Still tempted with Techno-viper, great figure and I'd love to have more green traffic cones. If there's anything I want to army-build right now, it's this: news.toyark.com/2010/10/28/skeleton-soldier-revoltech-photos-and-info-3431-Jim

Junkeons, sweeps, autotroopers, insecticons, seekers (though hasbro or fp never jumped on this like the cartoon and 3H did), beast era vehicons, prime era vehicons, movie era constructicons, movie era decepticons, virulent clones, sharkticons. Then if you get clever, there are a lot of other opportunities. Like i said earlier, the unicron cult idea. There's also transmetal II scourge, as it would be fitting on a lot of levels to have an army of him. BW Insecticon could also work as a predacon troopbuilder. Lockdown could work well as a G2 decepticon troopbuilder, if you wanna go with marvel G2.

I now have two of them, ordered when HLJ had their blanket 15% off thing last November (finally shipped my private warehouse last week). They look great, maybe a touch greyer than I expected. Haven't removed them from packaging yet - and it is lovely Japanese packaging, not unlike the TFC reissues with a flap held by velcro and a window on to the contents. -Jim

I now have enough kreo Klingons that I am now contemplating a full scale invasion of Romulan Space. Somewhere in the ballpark of two dozen, at this point.

It would be so tempting! Slightly relieved HLJ is now completely out of stock and it is typically over priced on BBTS.
It has led me to discover some of the other releases in the Revoltech Sci-Fi line though, including the just released Thunderbirds Mole vehicle. Oh dear.
