Sad day, but also kind of wonderful to see so many around the world affected by it. I can't think of many whose death would do that.
Seeing the video of him when he was released brought back the memory of watching it when it happened so clearly, I hadn't realised how much impact that had on me.

Me neither. But what had more impact was his constant moral power. When he was released, instead of seeking revenge he instead preached forgiveness and equality. Incredible human being.

Indeed.
The world is all the poorer for his passing.

We have one less true hero in our world tonight. I remember him being released and my parents (my mother being South African amd my father living there for much of his youth) following the events from the UK as closely as you could back then.
I was a bit too young to really understand it all then but the more I've learnt over the years have never left me with anything other than profound admiration for the heart and generosity of this man.

He made his mark on history by turning away from a path of violence to a path of peace (probing that the latter is what actually works) and thus shamed us all into looking at our own actions that little bit more closely. He'll still be remembered 100 years from now.

Nelson Mandela was a man who demonstrated enormous moral courage. I have no hesitation in calling him a genuine hero of our times. He will be be remembered for a long, long time.
