I always believed in that legend. Wonder what will happen to the recovered cartridges.

After being in a landfill for 30 years they don't look in great shape, I imagine they'll just put them back

The boxes are cream crackered but I wonder if the cartridges still work?

I would say the odds of the cartridges being tried out to find one that works are very high indeed.

And even if they don't I bet that owning a Landfill ETs will get some kudos amongst video game fans

I bought an ET cartridge for next to nothing 5 months ago. The cart is still in good nick, but not sure if it still works.
Its more of an artefact than an active game because of the story behind it.

Even if they don't work, I'm sure they could start selling them online to people wanting a genuine piece of video game history, or at least ignominy. You know, like bits of the Berlin Wall.

Yes, but will The Hoff sing about freedom on top of them this time?

Yeah, I'm pretty sure ironically this particular batch of ETs could become the most valuable Atari games of all.

While it's awesome to see them excavated, it's not really an urban legend as such - the dumping and burying of the games and the exact location at which it happened was reported in the news at the time (and officially verified by Atari), so it's not like anything much has been proved, just exhumed. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atari_video_game_burialThere's some good stuff on it (and the ET game itself) in the book Racing the Beam which I highly recommend to anyone with fond memories of the 2600. -Jim

Friend of mine at work was recently clearing her loft and came across a boxed Atari 2600 she had as a child, a proper wood panel six switch one, with a handful of carts. But she couldn't get it to work, so I said I'd have a look. Mostly because the 2600 was the first console I had.
Turns out the power supply had died, so I bought a new one this morning and have just spent a few hours playing games I haven't played on an actual Atari for about 30 years.
Brilliantly, one of the carts was ET. I've never played that, so I can now proudly claim to have completed the legend on the actual console it was made for. And it is indeed rubbish, even by 1982 standards.
